Community Highlights: Meet Jaz Brewer of 64111 Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaz Brewer

Hi Jaz, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started recording in high school with a tape deck and a radio shack mixer, and portable cd player with my brother Joe Good. I built a computer in college and began recording with digital software. I got good at editing and recording by doing step show edits for all of the black greek organizations and recording artists on campus. I graduated college and began recording in my mom’s dining room. In October of 2003 my guy Tommy lift approached me about a building on 17th and summit. I got a job at Pfizer to finance the buildout of the studio, and Ive been here recording for the last 23 years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles initially was financing. Not easy to get a bank loan for a studio in Kansas City. It took a village. Friends family and my own hard work got me on my feet. Marketing was another struggle, Before social media, I had to go to night clubs and artist shows with flyers and business cards to get my name out there. Competition was another struggle, Computers and studio gear became increasingly cheaper so there were quite a few studios that came and went over the years. As technology advanced, you can record on your phone now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Jaz Brewer, Emmy Award winning engineer and owner of 64111 Studios, has been the premier urban recording studio in Kansas City for over 22 years. I have worked with countless national and local recording artists and labels such as Atlantic and Republic. I also have countless billboard plaques with Tech N9ne, Levelle, Anthony Hamilton and others.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Technology has allowed the average person to record, and A.I. has a big impact on the sound quality. I hope there is a renaissance with the sound of music, but its trending more towards digital sounds, less organic. Full albums may be more of a thing of the past as well, singles and EPs with be more dominant as people consume information at an increasingly faster pace.
