Today we’d like to introduce you to Janice Pinson
Hi JANICE, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a semi-retired Human Resources executive. I was interested in doing something new and a bit out of my comfort zone as I think about the next phase. I was looking to start or buy a business that would be out of the corporate world, have a positive impact, be fun and keep me learning new things. I worked with a franchise consultant who introduced me to a number of concepts and I landed on fitness. This was not something I would have expected. I haven’t been much of a fitness person in my life but, in the past few years, had started to work out regularly and realized what a positive impact it had made in how I feel, what I can do and my overall well-being. My nephew, who was a college athlete and coach with an education in sports psychology. , was looking for a growth path and things aligned. I’ve hired two additional personal trainers who are incredibly knowledgeable and tremendously caring people. I couldn’t be prouder of the team and that I get to help them achieve new goals and grow while they help our clients achieve their goals and improve their well-being. I have purchased 2 locations to be able to impact more people and double the fun!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t exactly say smooth, but there have really not been too many struggles. The franchisor has put together a terrific business model and tools to train and prepare owners. The model is fairly simple and provides a fundamental service that just about everyone can derive benefit from. For me, there have been lots of first-time experiences that have meant more time and energy – such as navigating the commercial real estate process, building out a space, mastering sales processes – but it has been energizing and rewarding and exactly what I was looking for in terms of learning new things.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Now in its 32nd year, Alloy offers a personal training system that provides proven results for people focused on healthier, active lifestyles — not the latest fads. We work with clients in a small group setting – no more than 6 at a time – and specialize in working with people at all ages and fitness levels to work out safely while building strength and functional movement. We know that people do better with personal coaching, encouragement, support, and accountability. Our clients want to look good, feel great, and live life to the fullest! Alloy-Overland Park is the first Alloy Personal Training in Kansas City area located at 5053 W. 119th Street in Hawthorne Plaza and we have plans for a second location in Prairie Village.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Starting a new business is always a risk and requires some degree of faith. After looking at a variety of options, I felt like Alloy was a good bet – I am exactly in the target audience and a living example of what happens with the right amount of movement, and I can passionately talk about the ways our services can positively impact an individual’s. I knew I could rely on expertise from the franchisor and other advisors to help me learn and I could lean on my business experience in a variety of industries and business types to keep perspective and momentum through the process. Most people I talk to about starting a business remark on the difficulty in hiring and managing people, yet that is where I am most comfortable. My professional career has been in the Human Resources field. I have a strength in recruiting, talent management and developing people, so for me, that is the fun part! I felt like my experience and my resourcefulness to leverage experts would mitigate the risk and so far, I haven’t been disappointed.
