Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Whitlock.
Hi Jaclyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Of course! I am a family nurse practitioner and mom of four busy kids, ages 3 through 9. I worked for several years in a large, busy health system providing primary care, but after having my fourth child, I found myself struggling to balance work, kids, home life, and everything else. At the time, I was already doing some virtual visits with patients and felt like life could be a lot easier if I could work entirely from home.
That wasn’t an option at my current job, and I was also becoming frustrated with how difficult it was for patients to get timely appointments or to feel truly heard and cared for in the standard practice setting. So, I ultimately ended up with the crazy idea to take a leap and start my own practice.
My goal was to make healthcare more convenient for people—especially other busy moms—by offering accessible, personalized care where you don’t feel rushed and you can easily reach out to to someone who actually knows you when needed. I also wanted to create a space where I could integrate more holistic and functional approaches to care, looking beyond symptoms to support the whole person and address root causes of issues.
Over the last three years, that mission has grown into a deeper focus on women’s health, hormone management, and holistic wellness—areas where I’ve seen a real need and where I’ve become incredibly passionate about.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Luckily, it hasn’t been too rough overall, but I definitely started out with no idea how to start or run a business. I’ve had to learn as I go—often with the help of Google, online research, and advice from other business owners. It has been and still is a lot of work, but I am so happy that I chose this path.
I have also struggled at times with defining exactly how I wanted to practice. Coming from a very conventional, Western medicine background, I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to more holistic and integrative approaches—and that’s also what many of my patients value. I’ve worked to find a balance that blends the best of both traditional and holistic care to create a more complete, personalized, patient-centered approach.
As you know, we’re big fans of WellKC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
WellKC is an all-virtual healthcare practice owned and operated by me—a local Kansas City mom. We provide care for adults 18 and older, offering primary care, urgent care, mental health support, and more.
One of our primary areas of focus is hormone health. I absolutely love talking about and helping with hormones, and I work closely with women in their 20s to 60s who are navigating perimenopause, menopause, or other hormonal imbalances and are often struggling to find the support they need. I was inspired to expand into this specialty after seeing firsthand how challenging it can be for women to find a provider who truly listens, takes their concerns seriously, and goes beyond the basics to understand what’s really going on.
Too often, women are told that it’s “normal” to feel exhausted, struggle with sleep, or suffer through hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, mood changes, and weight gain. At WellKC, we know these symptoms may be common—but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them.
We take a comprehensive and personalized approach by listening carefully, running detailed lab panels, and creating individualized plans to help each woman feel her best. This may include lifestyle, diet, and exercise guidance, targeted supplements, and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) when appropriate.
One thing I’ve made sure of at WellKC is that care is easy, thorough, and personal. You can text us anytime with questions, and we can always get you in for same-day urgent care visits. When you reach out, you’ll be talking directly with me or our practice manager—not a stranger. We truly value building long-term relationships with our patients, and I’m incredibly proud of that.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think that a lot of things that I initially saw as bad luck turned out to be good luck in the long run. Over the years, I’ve missed out on opportunities and been passed over for jobs – even right before starting WellKC – but not going down those paths ultimately led me to where I am today.
While luck may seem to play a role at times, it has truly been hard work, dedication, and purpose that have helped me build and grow WellKC into what it is today. I’ve poured my heart into this practice and continue working every day to make it the best it can be — so I can keep showing up and helping others in the ways they need most.
I have been incredibly fortunate to build a wonderful community of patients—mostly fellow moms I can genuinely relate to—who have supported my practice and continue to refer other amazing patients my way.
