Community Highlights: Meet Hallie Sigwing of Hallie Sigwing Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hallie Sigwing.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was a kid, I never left the house without my camera. What started out as a hobby, photographing my family and friends, quickly turned into a high school side hustle. I filled my weeknights photographing families and seniors, and at the tender age of 16 I was asked to photograph my first wedding. Everything snowballed from there – by the time I got to college I had a full roster of weddings filling up my weekends, while I spent the weekdays as a student at KU. After college I moved to NYC, and spent a few years traveling and photographing weddings all across the United States. I eventually landed back in Kansas City. I have been fortunate enough to photograph weddings all over the world. Although I’ve lost count at this point, I have photographed over 350 weddings since 2011, and I truly feel like I have my dream job.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Any self-employed person will tell you, it’s certainly not the easy road! I am so grateful I had such a head start by starting my business at such a young age. I have learned so much over the past 14 years. The hardest thing to learn has been time management. It can be overwhelming to balance your schedule when you work for yourself. Fitting in self-care, personal time, time with family and friends and getting all of your work done by deadline can sometimes feel impossible. Learning to have good boundaries has been a huge lesson for me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Hallie Sigwing Photography?
I am a documentary style wedding photographer in Kansas City. I specialize in weddings and events. My work is focused on capturing wedding days without being intrusive. I like to be a fly on the wall as the wedding day unfolds. Gone are the days of cheesy portraits and “faking” anything for the shot. Building a strong relationship with my couples is my number one priority. I am available in Kansas City and worldwide.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think we’ll see a big shift toward smaller, more intimate weddings. People seem to be leaning away from having a traditional wedding party, and are more focused on making their wedding feel unique and special to their relationship.
