Today we’d like to introduce you to Etienne Warnery.
Hi Etienne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am French, born and raised, and for a long time photography was not the plan professionally, just a nice hobby I started back in 2006. I trained as a mechanical engineer and spent years designing mountain bikes for Lapierre, GT, Cannondale, Specialized. The GT Fury 2013 downhill bike is still the project I am proudest of. I loved that work. It meant listening to pro riders’ needs, translating them into the bike they dreamed of, and watching them win world cups with it.
Life brought me to Kansas City where I met my wife Beth, and in September 2023 I started ATN Photography, centered on documentary wedding photography. She is the reason the business exists at all, my number one fan, the one who told me to stop treating photography as a hobby and start treating it as a craft worth building a life around.
What I do now is a good balance between creativity, artistry and engineering. I read the room, set up the camera and light, anticipate what is about to happen. I am building proof that the love was visible, that the joke landed, that someone’s dad actually cried. I do not direct or pose much. I move through a wedding day like a guest who happens to have a camera, close enough to feel it, invisible enough that people forget I am there.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth, no. Leaving a stable engineering career to start a photography business from zero, in a country that is not the one I grew up in, was a leap that looked reckless from the outside. I had no client list, no name recognition in Kansas City, and no safety net beyond my wife’s belief that this could work.
The first struggle was simply being found. I could take the photos, that part I trusted. But nobody knew I existed. Building visibility from nothing, in a market saturated with wedding photographers, meant learning skills that had nothing to do with a camera: writing, marketing, search engines, all the unglamorous plumbing behind a creative business.
The second struggle has been pricing myself right in a constantly changing market. I started with low pricing that I have had to raise as the experience I deliver to couples has grown.
And there is the ongoing balancing act of running a documentary business alone. I shoot, I edit, I answer every message, I plan the year’s finances, and I still want to be present as a husband. Some weeks that balance tips hard in one direction. I am still learning how to hold all of it without losing the reason I started.
We’ve been impressed with ATN Photography LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ATN Photography is a documentary wedding photography studio based in Lee’s Summit, serving Kansas City and available for destinations worldwide. I specialize in telling the story of a wedding day as it actually happens. I rarely direct, pose, or stage moments. I move through a wedding the way a guest would, close enough to feel what is happening, easy enough to forget so the moments stay real.
What sets me apart starts with a promise I made to myself when I was eight years old, that I would never forget what it feels like to be a child. Curious. Playful. Uninhibited. I am drawn to adults who have kept that same aliveness, the ones who still laugh easily, still play, still act from something unguarded. I recognize it immediately in the couples I photograph, and that recognition is what makes the connection feel less like hiring a vendor and more like meeting someone who already understands you.
I also read a little differently than most people. I am dyslexic, and growing up, pictures carried meaning for me that words often did not. That is likely why I was drawn to documentary storytelling in the first place, catching one frame that says everything a caption would have tried to explain.
As a brand, I am most proud of the experience I create. Again and again, couples tell me they felt relaxed, supported, and genuinely able to enjoy their day. The photographs matter, of course, but what matters even more to me is helping people stay present for one of the most important days of their lives.
At its core, my business is about people, connection, and preserving memories that feel honest. I want readers to know that wedding photography does not have to be stressful or overly posed. The best images come from real moments, and those are the moments I love to capture. If you show up fully yourself on your wedding day, my job is simply to notice it and hand it back to you.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is helping people stay fully present in the moments that matter.
Life moves quickly, and so much of it disappears before we realize how meaningful it was. Weddings are one of the few days where the people you love most gather in one place, and yet it’s surprisingly easy to spend the day thinking about timelines, photos, or whether everything is going according to plan. I want my couples to experience their wedding instead of feeling like they’re constantly stepping out of it to create memories.
That’s why my approach leans so heavily on documentary storytelling. My goal isn’t simply to make beautiful photographs. It’s to protect the experience itself. The images become meaningful because they come from moments that were genuinely lived, not recreated for the camera.
More broadly, I think that’s what photography is really for. We don’t make photographs because we’ll forget everything. We make them because memory fades, and sometimes one honest image can bring back a feeling we thought was gone forever. If my work can help someone relive not just what happened, but what it felt like to be there, then I’ve done my job.
