Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Jordan Gensky.
Hi Erica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started my career in journalism, specifically strategic communication, so I never would have thought I’d end up here. In my first job out of college, I worked as a marketing director and had the opportunity of working closely with the business owner. I learned a lot about what running a business looked like, and I quickly found a passion to one day become a business owner myself. At the same time, I was planning weddings on the side as a hobby – including my own! When the vision to blend the two ideas came to be, it was full steam ahead.
When COVID-19 hit in 2020, my company shut down and I was out of a job. I decided to take a leap of faith and go all-in on Erica Jordan’s wedding. I took everything I learned from my previous job and turned my side hustle into a real business. One booking at a time, I filled my 2021 calendar, and I realized I would need some serious help in 2022. This year I hired a lead coordinator who takes on her own events, and I have two wedding day attendants that help with all the details on wedding days.
Today, EJW executes about 15 weddings a year, and the number is growing with every year that comes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the beginning, I really struggled with what success looked like to me. I’m a perfectionist, and I wanted to take as many weddings as I possibly could and fill up my calendar. But I was also preparing to be a mom, and it was really important to me that I would be present day-to-day as my daughter grew up. When I talked to other business owners, many stated that there is no such thing as work/life balance when you’re a business owner, because it’s such a deep part of your life. Family and business seemed to be married (no pun intended).
I really struggled with feeling guilty if I was spending too much time at work, and then feeling guilty if I was spending too much time away from work with my daughter. Once I developed a clear understanding of what success is to me – managing a business that fulfills my responsibilities to my clients and pours into my team, while keeping being a present mom to my children the top priority – everything seemed to fall into place. For me, work/life balance does exist. Delegating certain events to my team and managing time for both is key.

Something that might surprise people is that I am actually very musical!
It has been years since I’ve seriously pursued my instruments or singing, so many people who met me through the business would never know. But if a pianist or vocalist doesn’t show up for the wedding day, I have my couples covered!
