Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Brandon Van Anne of Psalm 30:2 Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Brandon Van Anne.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started? Chiropractic has always been a love of mine, even from an early age. Chiropractic care was one of the only things to help my father with debilitating back pain he had received from a work injury. As an athlete, I would receive regular adjustments, and I was always in awe of how quickly my aches and pains would disappear. I have my undergraduate in Health Sciences from Emporia State University and I have started multiple companies, but I have always been drawn to Chiropractic.
When I met my wife Nova, I would decide to go back to school and make the dream of becoming a doctor happen. I had always planned on becoming a sports medicine doctor, Then we had our first daughter and it changed everything! Our sweet little girl was born just one month after I started chiropractic school, so you can imagine the exhaustion my wife and I both felt. On top of adjusting to a new school schedule and studying both day and night, we were also adjusting to waking up every hour with our newborn. Plus she was extremely colicky, she would scream non stop both day and night. We ended up taking her into to a chiropractor at about two weeks old, honestly, with little hope. At that point, even as a first year chiropractic student, we really didn’t fully understand the benefits and the power of chiropractic care, especially for children. We watched as our baby screamed (per usual) through the first 30 seconds of her adjustment and then something amazing happened… her body completely relaxed! We watched our screaming baby almost go limp, stop crying, and start SMILING! It was as if we were witnessing a miracle. Her body completely unwound and she received instantaneous relief.
That was the moment I knew I wanted to focus on pediatric and pregnancy care. I watched my daughter improve with each adjustment and quickly come out of the colicky symptoms that other doctors told us we would just have to “deal with”. I knew I needed to learn how to do this not only for my own children but children and parents everywhere. As much as I wanted it for my own daughter, I wanted to make sure that all babies get the start they deserve, relieving discomfort and optimizing the functionality of their tiny nervous systems, never having to just “deal with it”. Just a few misalignments can wreak havoc on the body. Research now shows us that in as little as two weeks of retaining a subluxation (misalignment), the body begins to display the early signs of degeneration. Labor and delivery cause trauma not only to mom, but to these
little bodies, the relief of these injuries can help your child transition through developmental stages smoothly and more comfortably.
Through my time in school, my wife and I would have our other two daughters and I gained the experience of not only learning to adjust my wife, offering her a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery, but I also had the amazing honor of catching all three of my daughters during delivery and then adjusting them mere hours afterwards. Seeing the benefits chiropractic care can have during pregnancy, postpartum, and on the tiniest of infants only further grew my passion! Though we are pain management physicians, chiropractic provides so many more benefits, like helping to up-regulate your immune system, reduce morning sickness during pregnancy, help regulate your gastrointestinal health by promoting vagal tone, which by the way, can help us battle things like anxiety, panic, and much more. I myself have overcome a battle in the area of anxiety, and if you know someone battling with these issues please send them my way, I’d love to help them find freedom from these debilitating diseases. The main point is that I fell in love with all of it! I love helping little fussy babies, I love treating toddlers who love to play and who regularly take falls, I love helping kids who are constantly on the go with sports stay at their best, and I love helping mothers throughout the entirety of their pregnancies and thereafter; I love helping treat and educate parents so that they feel their best and so that they are better able to care for their amazing kiddos! Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggle was definitely having three babies all during my time in school, two of whom were sick with Mast Cell Diseases which wouldn’t be diagnosed until my third year of medical school. I am sure I will go more into the details of their illness later in this interview, but ultimately they experienced constant gastrointestinal problems, hives, rashes, trouble concentrations, musculoskeletal pain, episodes of anaphylaxis, migraines, and unfortunately so much more. They were constantly meeting new specialist and needing testing at the hospital. They got even less sleep than the average bad sleeping babyish/toddlers. Chiropractic school is already extremely hard, taking about 32 to 40 credit hours each trimester (yes, all year round) and studying for all of those classes, so at times the exhaustion was excruciating. But, through all of that, God sustained us. He sustained us through exhaustion and worry, through financial needs and physical healing. Yes, you read that correctly. Not to
minimize the support we received through other modalities of care, but it was God who delivered our girls from the more than unlikely healing and resolution of all of their ailments. We had to take notice of the blessings before us, God gave us three beautiful girls to care for, a church home full of caring family and friends, and classmates and mentors who would ultimately become lifelong friends who’d support us and change our lives for the better, forever! As you know, we’re big fans of Psalm 30:2 Chiropractic. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand? I am the owner of Psalm 30:2 Chiropractic. We serve people of all ages from newborns to grandparents, but I’d be lying if I said pregnant moms and kids didn’t hold a special place in my heart! After having the honor of experiencing our three pregnancies and the birth of our three girls all while watching my warrior of a wife experience this amazing right of passage, I knew I was hooked on pregnancy and pediatric care. My wife Nova and all of my kids (Basil, Maple, and Elowen) have benefited so much from chiropractic care. The experience with my own family has sprouted a seed in my heart for the support and care of pregnant moms and children everywhere.
Did you know that America is currently the most dangerous developed country to give birth in? 50,000 mothers are severely injured and about 700 or more die during childbirth every year. It was reported that half of these deaths could have been prevented and half of the injuries reduced or eliminated with better care. As a doctor, I am proud to help pregnant moms use their voices to demand the care they deserve from their providers. I was lucky enough to help my wife through three pregnancies and natural births in which our midwives listened to her needs and desires. Unfortunately, I have heard time and time again, from others mothers, that they did not receive that same respect during their pregnancies and deliveries, they felt pushed into interventions they did not want and most importantly, did not feel heard. I think one thing that sets me apart from most doctors is that I am a male practitioner advocating for pregnant females everywhere and their right to be in charge of their birthing experience. I am proud to work beside these parents, both mothers and fathers, encourage them through education, and make them aware of their options during labor in order to promote the best possible outcomes for everyone involved. We also have many resources whether it be midwives, reliable OBGYN’S, or doulas to refer moms to so they can have the safe and calming birthing experience that they desire and deserve.
As I have stated, we were fortunate in that we had amazing birthing experiences. Our journey with practitioners would not end there, as two of our daughters would struggle with MTHFR variants and rare Mast cell Diseases. We knew something was off with the health of our children. Early on we voiced our concerns and they fell on ears seemingly unwilling to hear our concerns. Why? For the mere fact that our baby at first glance appeared “fine”. We were told our daughter was a healthy weight, that she were developing on track, and that we we needed to stop self-diagnosing our children. We were smart of enough to trust our instincts, continue researching our child’s symptoms, and try to discover the answers for ourselves. We then found a practitioner knowledgeable enough to trust a parent’s intuition and dig deeper into what we as parents thought the problem was. A simple oral swab would discover the MTHFR variants we had predicted, but still our journey was not yet over. When our second daughter was born, she had terrible rashes, flushing, her gastrointestinal health was in constant flux, and she was in pain. As time went on and our daughters got older, they both started exhibiting worsening symptoms, regardless of the paleo and anti-inflammatory diets they had eaten their whole lives. They began seeing specialist after specialist, some were wonderful and worked hard to research and hear us, others were egotistical and refused to see past the generally “healthy” appearance of our children. We yet again had to dive deep into research, request our own labs, and find practitioners in several fields to hear our hypotheses, help us run tests in order to actually conclude that our girls had inherited rather rare Mast Cell Diseases.
Fast-forward to today, our girls are healed of these rare diseases by the grace of God himself! I pride myself on being an advocate for parents who have children with hard to diagnose diseases or abnormalities. I will listen to and trust you and your instincts when you feel something is wrong, and I am dedicated to helping you find a solution, not just mask the symptoms of their discomfort, but truly try and unroot the source of the issue at hand.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you? For any small business, the easiest way for us to grow our practice and help more people in our great community is through grassroots development. I am sure you have seen it said that “the greatest compliment is the referral of your family and friends”. When you tell your friends about your experience with us, follow us on social media, share one of our many informative posts, or leave us a review on google it not only helps our practice grow but also gives others the chance to
receive the same support and care so many of our patients have already experienced.
At Psalm 30:2 Chiropractic, we consider ourselves an integrative office. We understand that practitioners of different modalities provide their own positive contributions to health care and when we can set aside our difference and set our focus on the patient, we can truly provide a holistic 360 degree approach to wellness. We work with all forms of practitioners from midwives to occupational and physical therapists, pediatricians, and medical doctors of varying degrees.
