Community Highlights: Meet Dani Moore of Black Women Making Friends KC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Moore.

Dani Moore

Hi Dani, It’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us. You could share some of your backstory with our readers.
BWMFKC was birthed from a global BWMF group. I helped admin that group and then created a messenger group chat with some of the ladies that joined from the area. We eventually got too big and moved into our group. We started as a small Facebook group doing brunches and small meetups. Eventually, we grew, so I decided to brand the group and create public pages to advertise. Last year was our largest year for growth, and we’re close to 3k members! On the calendar, we have brunch, a hiking group, and a girl’s night/meetup every month. This group started to disrupt the narrative that black women couldn’t be friends and have bad energy toward each other. We have tough conversations and positive spaces in which to be ourselves.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been smooth for the most part. We have had small challenges with expectations. We had to remind everyone that although they were in the group, they would not immediately have a friend. Developing friends is just like developing romantic relationships. You have to put in the work.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Black Women Making Friends KC is a group for and by Black Women in KC. We create a safe space for Black Women to have good conversations and spaces to come together and connect to develop great friendships. We have standing monthly meetups/ brunches and even hikes to get outside and connect. I am most proud that we were able to do our first community-focused event, “Breakfast With Santa,” last year. We obtained a lot of sponsors from businesses and women in the group. We all volunteered to give inner city kids a fantastic Christmas event with a Black Santa. We are free to join! There are no monthly memberships, but every event does cost. So you can decide if you want to come out each month. We are increasing, but every black woman in the area is welcome here!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Believe in yourself. I started doing small outings, and as we grew, I wanted to do large events for our group. They were a little pricey, and I worried no one would support or want to come out. We have our most expensive event in April, “What’s The Tea?” and we have only 3 tickets left. I doubt myself before putting out a lot of events, but these ladies constantly show up, and I show up for them!
