Community Highlights: Meet Cody Pieschl of Code Red Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Pieschl

Hi Cody, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My love and curiosity for music started in high school. Whether it was making beats or playing guitar, I couldn’t wait to get home from school each day and lock in til the late hours of the night.

I graduated from the Institute of Audio Engineering Arts in KCK in 2012 and immediately jumped into a near decade long career in live sound. I learned so much about engineering and work ethic during my time working for numerous companies in Kansas City, running festivals, doing a little touring, and gigging for every venue in town.

In the back of my mind though, the studio is where I always wanted to be. In 2020, Covid took away all work as a live sound engineer. I took this as a sign from the universe that now was the time for me to start my studio and production business. Code Red Productions was founded in the basement of my home in Overland Park and over the next four years evolved into the studio today in Kansas City, KS.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely a bumpy road – gas up the 4×4!

Working in music full-time can be so rewarding creatively and when you see music you helped create resonate with others, the feeling is unmatched. However, working in music full-time can be very taxing mentally, physically, and financially. Whether it was working 20-hour days on site at a festival or running a studio convincing artists why they should trust you with their art, each step of this journey has had different challenges that I’ve had to embrace.

As you know, we’re big fans of Code Red Productions. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As we all know, right now – streaming is king. It’s the way most people are consuming music daily and it’s no secret that the low payout for artists from streaming platforms is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. I think we will see a shift away from artists uploading music to DSPs and see more and more artists moving towards artist-owned, direct-to-consumer sales platforms. What we are seeing already are independent artists making a good living using this model. More physical copies and more merchandise being supported by smaller, more dedicated fan bases.
