Community Highlights: Meet Celsie Sneden of NEAT Method

Today we’d like to introduce you to Celsie Sneden.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Not long after getting my Theatre Degree from Washburn University in Topeka, KS, I moved to Chicago, IL to immerse myself in the improv world. One night during a performance, one of my castmates performed a bit about her day job sorting her clients’ things and carrying stunning beaded gowns up and downstairs. She was getting laughs but all I could think was, “OMG! I have found my calling!” I don’t remember anything else from that show except that I pounced on her afterward and begged her to connect me to her boss.

I spent the next year learning the trade from the owner of NEAT Method Chicago and other organizers on the team. By year two, I could sense there was major growth coming for the company. My hometown is Topeka and I knew I eventually wanted to end up closer to home but wasn’t sure when I would make the move back. So I asked if anyone had an interest in the Kansas City market. They said, “There isn’t NOT interest…” That’s all I needed to hear; I was headed back home and bringing NEAT Method to Kansas!

Following a ton of research, talking with people who knew the Kansas City market, studying contracts, long soul-searching talks with my friends and family, and plenty of happy and sad tears, I rolled out of Chicago and back to Kansas. NEAT Method Kansas City launched in September of 2017. Four years later, I still find it all a little hard to believe: I own my own business; I help people live better, more organized lives; and I make money to do something which is so completely suited to my strengths, to who I am inside, that I usually don’t even think of it as work (unless there are a ton of stairs involved)!

Now, I enjoy living in the Overland Park area, sharing life with my boyfriend and our two cats (brothers with the need to show ALL of their love for me on my office days at home). My brother lives in KC and my family and friends are all only an hour away. So, I enjoy as much time as I can with all of my loved ones here in Kansas.

There’s something else you should know about me. While living in Chicago, when I wasn’t studying improv or performing, I worked as a barista and eventually as a hostess. One night, I crossed paths with the first of three families I would end up nannying for the duration of my time in Chicago. Really, aside from learning the trade which set me on my forever career, the relationships I forged with those little people defined my time in Chicago. We still talk all the time. I love them dearly and will ALWAYS consider them my “Chicago Family.”

When I reflect on where I am now and if there were any signs in my childhood that pointed to this path, it really is no shock I became a professional organizer. For fun, starting at a young age, I was regularly found refolding all my clothes, rearranging my bedroom, and finding new ways to ‘organize’ my closet. But I will forever credit my time on the NEAT Method Chicago team for almost everything I know about organizing and running a business.

The thing is I was trained amongst clients in Chicago, which is one of the company’s highest-grossing cities and now I was breaking-in fresh into Kansas City. While I knew the craft well, I found that there were many times I needed to adjust the way I talk about my service to prospective clients. I learned quickly that, while I may be running a luxury-branded business, the word “luxury” makes some prospects uncomfortable. I get that. I’m from this part of the country too. What I really want people to know is the work my team and I do is really about making your life better by making your space easier to live in.

Now that Netflix has several shows about organizing (two and a half years AFTER I launched NEAT Method KC) I spend a little less time clarifying that NEAT Method is not a cleaning service or an event organizing business or an interior design firm. Between speaking engagements, consultations, networking events, partnerships, and yes, the Netflix shows I like to think all those things help to expand awareness of the amazing benefits we bring to our clients.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The work IS fun but there have been challenges, of course. Aside from simply raising awareness of our services in a new market, the greatest struggles have come from what I thought owning my own business should be like and comparing that to my reality. My goal was (and still is) to oversee multiple teams of organizers working for clients across the region every day of the week. Of course, it hasn’t been like that; not yet.

Also, having worked with a very fun and nurturing team in Chicago, nothing could have prepared me for the vast amount of time I spend alone working on my computer. That can be pretty isolating (cue the cats). But I would say to anyone who is trying to build a business doing something they absolutely love, all the struggles are worth it.

NEAT Method Kansas City is a professional home organizing company that specializes in moves and relocations. Our services range from maximizing the function of a single space by implementing a new organizational system to managing entire moves and home unpacks (inclusive of downsizing/rightsizing). Life gets hectic and whether it is the day-to-day challenge of maintaining an organized home or the stress of a big life event, NEAT Method is committed to providing customized solutions that bring comfort, efficiency, and function.

A huge point of brand pride has to be the launch of our own NEAT Method product line. The amount of thought and consideration that has gone into the making of each piece, with the intention of being versatile and environmentally consciences blow me away.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned as a business owner is to set clear expectations and clear boundaries for myself, for my clients, and for my team. This helps to create a situation everyone is happy to be in and feels good about.
