Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Stewart
Hi Cameron , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story is not unlike many other people who lost a job or career during the pandemic. I was in the midst of leaving a previous position in sales and marketing with the pandemic and subsequent shutdowns left a lot of us wondering “what’s next?” Instead of continuing down the spiral of sadness, disappointment, and confusion, I saw this as an opportunity to grow. Seeing people reach their true potential and unlock the skills that lay dormant inside of them has always filled me with joy. I had never considered that I could be a part of someone’s internal healing, but once I started my journey away from marketing and toward counseling something became very evident: this is what I was made for.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has certainly not been smooth, but I believe firmly in the saying “smooth seas make for bad sailors.” Leaving a career that had been built through struggle and hard work can be tough, but some things run their course. There is always doubt when you take a step into the unknown, but that should not be an excuse to err on the side of comfort. Being uncomfortable is sometimes a sign that you are in the midst of positive change. Reframing discomfort as “growing pains” makes it a bit easier for me to stay motivated and keep my focus on my goals and aspirations.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Stewart Therapy at GOKC Healing Center?
GOKC is a collaborative practice where numerous counselors can establish their own brand identities under a single umbrella. Coming into the therapy world as a new small business owner can have a lot of obstacles, and GOKC provides the space for new counselors to enjoy some of the benefits of a larger practice while maintaining the autonomy and flexibility of starting your own business. My personal brand of Stewart Therapy seeks to welcome clients into a space where they are comfortable being themselves and sharing their problems without any fears of judgement or backlash. I work to uplift and empower my clients to recognize their problems as solvable and to foster their belief in their own strength.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
As previously mentioned, my career change was one of the biggest changes or “lessons” that I learned from my Covid-19 experience. Something else that I discovered during that time was the importance of community and showing solidarity with those whose identities may not be so readily evident. Those with medical issues that aren’t outwardly manifested received a great deal of grief, judgement, and even outward hate during the pandemic. People’s health and their ability to have their autonomy threatened by an illness is an important part of what holds a community and a society together, and we must remind ourselves that the fates of our most at-risk neighbors is ultimately the fate of us all.
