Community Highlights: Meet Bennett Cook of B. Flicks Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bennett Cook

Hi Bennett , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since I was a little kid I always had a good eye for photography in an artistic sense but I never got to apply it until my mom gave me her old DSLR. I quickly fell in love with taking pictures and learning to edit. And soon enough, I was starting an Instagram page and teaching myself everything there was to know about equipment and editing. At the beginning, I simply did it all for myself as a hobby. It wasn’t until one day, at a basketball game at my school, I found myself talking to a fellow photographer who was an alumni of my same school. He had been on our state championship winning football team over a decade ago, and he told me the only thing he had to remember his entire high school career was a single picture, and his name on the state championship banner in the gym. I thought to myself, “that’s really a bit of a shame.” And quickly learned this was many people’s reality when it came to high school sports. Around this same time, I also came to the realization that my work tended to put a lot of smiles on people’s faces. This is when I became truly addicted to my work. I went to every single event I could go to, practicing my work more and more until it became something quality, and presentable. I began giving my work out for free on my Instagram page to promote myself. Soon enough, I had people and sports teams who wanted work from me! I decided to scale it all up to a business and as of today, it’s became my full time job and I get to travel all over the place doing photoshoots for individuals and teams. I’ve taken over 200,000 pictures, and captured lifelong memories for probably somewhere around a thousand people. I don’t believe I would be myself without photography, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the things I’ve achieved.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a straightforward, or easy path. In the beginning I often had troubles advertising myself, and getting jobs. But overtime I’ve slowly became better at marketing it and I hope to continue to do so in the future. Affording equipment in the beginning also quickly became a struggle, but thankfully that has mostly been resolved.

We’ve been impressed with B. Flicks Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
B. Flicks photography, named after myself, is a new small business that I created out of my love for photography, and capturing people’s most important moments. If there was one thing I could tell people about it all, I would say that although it is a lot of work, I enjoy it more than anything else. I specialize in still photography, and I’m known for my edits and easy access to my work. I think passion often sets people apart in industries like photography. I think I am a good example of that. I think I’m the most proud of how far I have gotten so far, and am excited to keep growing as a business. If there’s anything I’d like others to know about my work and I, it’s that I never take any opportunity for granted, and I treat every event as a learning opportunity. A chance to get better. And that for now, I only offer still photos, but in the future I’d like to expand my offerings.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the future, all I want is a steady trend up. If I could end up turning what I’ve made into a career, I believe that would be pretty incredible.
