Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin And Rachel Hathaway
Hi Benjamin and Rachel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We both worked in coffee shops during school, and always loved both the craft and the connections it brings. When we got married we used our wedding money to buy our first machine. Ben spent many hours repairing it and making modifications. A large portion of this was self taught. Rachel become a taste tester and offered valuable revisions. She spent considerable time crafting new syrups and drink recipes. A desire for accessible specialty coffee was born, and we began pursuing goals of making our own company. A coffee cart was the logical answer. We lived in Virginia at the time, but knew we wanted to move home to Kansas after finishing school. We spent about a year planning the build, working on branding, and sourcing supplies. We moved home this summer, and immediately began making the necessary purchases. Ben built the cart by hand, using his own modular design, so the cart can break down easily. This component gives us capability to serve a variety of events, from weddings, to farmers markets, to conventions. Our dream is to bring specialty coffee wherever people are, to make events and gatherings meaningful with hand crafted drinks.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We’ve had our fair share of hiccups. As young entrepreneurs, in a niche scene, there aren’t many resources for us. We utilize a lot of trial and error. We’re so grateful to have incredibly supportive friends and family. Small businesses thrive on meaningful connections. We may serve at an event that’s a total bust, but we met one person who was impacted a simple latte, and that’s why it matters. We aren’t here to make millions of dollars or followers. We want people to feel loved by what we do.
As you know, we’re big fans of Remington Coffee Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a specialty coffee company- this means that, from the farms to the cup, our beans are held to a higher standard than your everyday coffee.
Your espresso is hand crafted on the cart, its not a one button deal.
All of our syrups are house made, meaning no preservatives, no dyes, no artificial sweeteners. These syrups and sauces are designed to enhance the espresso, and make your drink more enjoyable altogether.
We’re entirely mobile! We bring specialty coffee to wherever you are. Because we are a small, local, and owner-run, when you buy a drink from the cart, that money goes directly back into the business.
We aren’t trying to be the next hit drive-thru. We love to talk to our customers about what they’re ordering, about the process, and our goals.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Having a a balanced skill set is a fundamental aspect of our company. Ben is full of intellect, and a fantastic decision maker. He can fix the machine in minutes. Rachel is more creative, heading up social media and design. Each party would not be able to function without the other. We both work for ways to serve one another, and refine our techniques. If we have any success, it is not of our doing, rather the work of God. We do everything as a service to him, and we hope our customers are blessed by the love we have been given.
