Community Highlights: Meet Anjel LaPoint of Be Better Journey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anjel LaPoint.

Hi Anjel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
As someone that has slowly made intentional lifestyle changes in what I eat, drink, as well as attempt to gain a better understanding of myself; I wanted to do more externally. I’ve always been interested in a way to give back so I began to volunteer in houseless outreach as well as donate items to local organizations around the city. I created a list of places to drop off items collected from my friends, neighbors and family. The support was immense almost immediately.

During the COVID quarantine mandate, it was difficult to donate used items. So, I created wristbands in order to donate monetarily. It was also a way to hopefully encourage others to try to be better humans.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My largest hurdle is balancing how much I am on my phone for not only my full-time job but being consistent with my social media, present with my family and allowing down time to just not stare at a screen. I have never been a fan of having too many platforms. It can easily be overwhelming.

Surprisingly, I am also finding it difficult to verbally answer the questions “why did you create this business?” Or “ tell me how you started.” Without giving a winded response. Sometimes, I just want to say “because it seemed like a good idea at the time.” Because why not, why not tell humans to be, not even the best version of themselves, just a little bit better each day. Why we do the things we do is so intriguing to me. If we all just take the time to understand our habits, emotions, quirks…it’s amazing what we can heal from. Like, what you eat directly impacts how you feel, act, think.

I am also an advocate for human rights (BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, women, our houseless community, etc.). I launched my brand during the peak of the George Floyd protests. There was and is, a heightened sense of needing better policing but if terrible humans are in positions of power that change we need will never happen.

Change for the community starts with the person, not profession.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
(Be Better. Journey) I design products to sell and raise funds for local organizations making a difference. I also use my main platform on Instagram to raise awareness for local small businesses, human rights, mental/physical health, and simply create a space to share what I’m learning on my own journey.

Sometimes all it takes to begin the journey is to hear you’re not going through something alone.

What are your plans for the future?
Just continuing to grow and educate myself. Collaborating with local shops to carry my brand is a big goal of mine. Not just for the exposure but awareness of the simple message to “be better.” I would also like to create a space for healthier food and drink options for my area of Kansas City… I guess we will see where the journey takes me.
