Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa O’Connor.
Hi Alyssa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a small town in Iowa and began my career as a nurse after attending ICCC. I loved nursing, especially hospice care, but being surrounded by end-stage disease every day shifted my perspective. I started reading about holistic approaches to chronic illness and realized that many symptoms and conditions could be significantly improved—or even prevented—by addressing their root causes and supporting the body’s ability to heal itself.
That realization led me to make the difficult decision to leave a career I loved and pursue chiropractic school, with the goal of helping people heal in a deeper, more foundational way. Once in school, I quickly realized that to treat patients the way I envisioned, I would need to open my own practice—something I had never imagined doing and had no experience in.
So, I immersed myself in books, mentorships, and podcasts, and slowly taught myself how to build and run a business. There were many moments of doubt, but for three weeks straight, I kept receiving clear signs from the Lord pointing me to open Sozo Chiropractic in Spring Hill. I finally listened—and here we are.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! The road has definitely had its bumps. I love being a doctor and caring for patients—that part comes naturally, and it’s what we do really well at Sozo. But the business side? I’ve had to learn all of that along the way.
Being a business owner brings a lot of ups and downs. One of the biggest challenges has been overcoming limiting beliefs—especially around money. I want to help everyone, and if I could give care away for free, I probably would. But I’ve had to grow in that area and shift my mindset to build a practice that’s both generous and sustainable.
I’ve also had to learn how to lead a team. I’ve served in the Army National Guard for over 16 years as an officer, so I came in with leadership experience—but leading in the civilian world, especially in a small business, is very different. Thankfully, I’ve been blessed with an incredible team who shares the vision.
One of the biggest leaps of faith was buying our building—it was a huge decision, and there have been many more like it. Every step of this journey has brought me back to my faith. None of this would have been possible without trusting Jesus. He’s led the way, even when I couldn’t see the next step.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sozo Chiropractic is a faith-driven, family-centered practice located in the heart of historic Spring Hill, Kansas. We specialize in neurologically based chiropractic care for all ages—from newborns to seniors—and we’re especially passionate about caring for children and families.
Our mission is to get to the root cause of pain, dysfunction, or dis-ease, rather than simply treating symptoms. We use a whole-body, nervous system–focused approach to help the body heal and thrive the way God designed it to.
What sets us apart is the environment we’ve created: it’s warm, welcoming, and built on trust. From the moment you walk in, you’re not just a patient—you’re part of a community that truly cares. We take time to listen, educate, and empower every person who walks through our doors.
We also offer supportive services like dry needling, StemWave therapy, red light therapy, decompression, and sauna to help accelerate healing and support long-term wellness.
What I’m most proud of is how Sozo has stayed true to its values: faith, family, integrity, and heart-centered care. The word “Sozo” means to be healed, restored, and made whole—and that’s exactly what we strive to offer every person we serve.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is: start before you feel ready. You’ll never feel 100% prepared—and that’s okay. You learn by doing. Take the next right step, and trust that the rest will unfold in time.
Also, surround yourself with wise counsel. Read the books, listen to the podcasts, find mentors, and stay open to learning. Entrepreneurship can be lonely if you isolate yourself, so don’t be afraid to ask questions and lean on others who’ve gone before you.
And most importantly, rely on your faith. There were so many moments I felt unsure or overwhelmed, but the Lord was faithful every time.
Be humble, be brave, and be obedient to what’s been placed on your heart. You were given the vision for a reason—don’t let fear talk you out of it.
