Community Highlights: Meet Alexis Bennett of Terry Tether

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Bennett.

Hi Alexis Bennett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself and how you came up with Terry Tether.
I am Alexis and my mom and I are inventors and partners in Terry Tether Boat Towel Clips. We were born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. My husband, Brian and I still live in Lees Summit, Missouri, raising three kids. My parents, Antionette and Bart, spend their spring and summers in Kansas City, but spend their winters in Longboat Key, Florida.

Mom and I have always loved being around water, soaking up Vitamin D, and enjoying the relaxing moments, when you can drop everything and just be—one of those exact moments allowed our creative juices to begin flowing. While cruising and relaxing in the boat’s bow, we began to have the same struggle we’d had for years; our towels would not stay up behind us. Every time we moved, they slipped down the seatback. At that moment, we began seriously brainstorming how to solve the problem. We continued discussing options when we returned to the condo after the day on the water. A few days later, we began working on the prototypes that eventually led to the Terry Tether we sell today.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Working as a mother and daughter team was the easy part. We have been working together for years. The learning curve came when we began finding manufacturers and crossing all the legal obstacles. Having never gone through the invention process, this was a new world for us. I took on our branding, website, and social media as a graphic designer. While my mom and dad worked on the prototype, testing, and manufacturing. Throughout the process, we worked together to meet our goals and get Terry Tethers into the world. As most entrepreneurs know, there are always different challenges you will face. My mom and I have always been able to work together to get through the tough points and find a solution. Having conquered this new realm, we can continue pushing forward through any challenges that come our way.

There are other beach towel clips out there. However, ours are the only towel clips that snap directly onto your boat! Using your Terry Tethers is easy. Just clip your Terry Tether to your beach towel and then connect the Terry Tether to the unused cover snaps on the boat, keeping your towel secure in a snap!

No boat snaps – No problem. They work even when you do not have cover snaps on your boat. They can be wrapped around the rail and attached to the second snap on the Terry Tether. Terry Tethers are extremely versatile; they work on the boat, beach chairs, pools, rail, and many other places. Our amazing customers have found many different ways to use them, and they keep coming up with more. Hikers have used them to keep their bags off the ground by wrapping them around the tree branch. Beachgoers have hooked them around their tents to keep their bags out of the sand. They’ve been used to hold hats and dog leashes in the boat. Moms have used them to attach baby toys to the stroller. The opportunities are endless. We love that the product we invented solves problems for our customers beyond our initial idea.
