Community Highlights: Meet Alexander Nelson of HML Chiropractic & Functional Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Nelson.

Hi Alexander, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My wife (Dr. Lauren) and I have been interested in taking care of kids with special needs since before we graduated from Chiropractic school. Just like in Medicine, Chiropractic has post-graduate board certifications of various specialties. Ours is in Functional Neurology – specifically developmental neurology and Functional Medicine.

The way I put it is Functional Neurology is the clinical application of the nervous system. We know what is normal, we know what is not normal, and we know that the brain can change, even with very severe, chronic issues such as severe Autism. With the proper examination and treatment, we devise fully custom plans to help people manage or overcome their health challenges.

In 2014 we gave birth to a girl, Harper. She had a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. It is one of the most lethal disorders that NICUs face today, it takes half of its victims and she was one of them. We knew if we were ever to get out of the hospital we would need any and all professionals on hand to get any functionality out of her, including functional neurologists.

After we lost her, we slowly got our lives together and decided to dedicate our careers and office to her. We were able to pull together the resources needed to open a place of our own and are blessed to say that we have all sorts of patients from all over getting better every day!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Rough does not begin to explain things. After our Baby Girl passed, even with all of the love and support of friends and family we had quite a few hospital bills and other financial challenges.

We did our best to keep our noses down and have landed in Lees Summit, taking care of LS, the KC metro, and beyond.

As you know, we’re big fans of HML Chiropractic & Functional Care. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our specialty is solving chronic health problems, primarily children with special needs – ADHD, OCD, Autism, Dyslexia, and other learning disorders.

We work with adults as well because early on when we would restore or improve the function of their child, then the parents would say “now it’s my turn.” So we combine advanced lab analysis, diet and lifestyle changes, nutritional supplements, and Functional Neurological Rehabilitation to improve people’s health.

We are the only facility specializing in Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Functional Neurology within the KC metro. We are very proud, yet humbled knowing people come from all corners of the United States to see us. What people need to know about us is that we will do all we can to reach our health goals and never give up.
