Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Ford.
Hi Tracy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Speakeasy smoker was a product of covid. A local bar served smoked Cocktails and during the shutdown they served cocktails to go with a bag of wood chips. They held a facebook competition to see who had the best way of using their wood chips to smoke their drink. I came up with a prototype and won the competition. Shortly after I started selling smokers to friends and it took off from there.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely had its ups and downs. When I started I never dreamed I would sell more than a handful of smokers. Along the way i’ve had to deal with finding new suppliers when my domes were discontinued, constantly redesigning features that weren’t working as expected, supply shortages, and poor quality control from other vendors.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a designer who is always trying to improve products. I have a masters degree in architecture which helped me gain an appreciation for design. Where there’s a will there’s a way would be the motto the best describes my work. I believe any design problem can be solved if I put my mind to it.
I would say my Speakeasy Smokers would be the work i’m most proud of. I’ve taken a business from a prototype to nearly 10k units sold across 7 different designs. All of those were designed and manufactured in my home shop.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Audiobooks are my go to help get me through a lot of the work I do. I’ve always loved reading but audiobooks allow me to multitask.
