Check Out Steven Gordon’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Gordon.

Hi Steven, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Steven Wittenberg Gordon, MD has been Board Certified in Family Medicine for over thirty years and has performed over 10,000 immigration medical exams and related services. A first generation American, Dr. Gordon made the decision in 2022 to devote 100% of his private medical practice to Immigration Medicine in memory of his father, who was a refugee and Holocaust survivor.

If a legal, registered alien is visiting the United States on a visa and wants to become a permanent resident (aka “green card” holder), Dr. Gordon performs the medical component of that process. If a permanent resident wants to become a naturalized citizen of the United States but has a disability that would make learning English, US civics, and/or understanding the Oath of Allegiance unrealistic, Dr. Gordon does the disability evaluation in support of a request for an exception to policy for those requirements.

Dr. Gordon is originally from a small town in upstate New York, but his heart now belongs to Kansas where he owns his home and raised his children. A minor heart defect kept him from joining the military right out of high school, so he took a different career path and decided to attend college. He obtained a BA in biology at Amherst College and then returned to the city nearest to where he grew up to earn his MD at Albany Medical College. He completed his residency training in family practice (now called family medicine) in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

At the turn of the century, Dr. Gordon’s heart defect was surgically corrected, which allowed him to fulfill his boyhood dream of military service. He joined the United States Air Force in 2000, where he served with distinction as a flight surgeon. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and separated with an honorable discharge in 2005. The former Major Gordon is now a proud member of Jewish War Veterans Post 605.

Shortly after separating from the Air Force, Dr. Gordon settled in Overland Park and established a successful private primary care practice, working out of the den/study of his personal home. He enjoys his short commute (walking down the stairs!) and the additional flexibility and availability that his cozy home office allows him in attending to his clients.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Dr. Gordon is also a professional bass singer. He sings with Madrigalia Bar Nonne, which performs madrigals in full period costume at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival. He also sings with Carolers of Note, which performs Christmas carols in Victorian-era costume for public and private events in the Kansas City area.

Dr. Gordon was recently invited to join the elite professional chorus, Musica Vocale, an ensemble made up of twenty-four highly skilled choral musicians that performs choral literature, often accompanied by orchestra, that is not often performed in the greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area. His first performance with them will be on March 29, 2026 and will feature rarely performed works by Henry Purcell.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The United States is a nation of immigrants. Economic and political factors obviously affect the number of people from foreign lands who will be allowed to apply for permanent residency and naturalization at any given time, but there will always be a need for medically screening these applicants.

Unless our educational system magically and dramatically improves, as our country’s economy becomes more and more reliant on highly skilled workers, more and more immigrants with the requisite skill sets will need to be recruited from foreign lands to do the work that needs to be done. Dr. Gordon does not anticipate having to throttle back any time soon!
