Check Out Stacey Beilman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Beilman.

Stacey Beilman

Hi Stacey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Photography has always been a part of my life. I remember I worked at Dillons in high school and I would go to the polaroid film and stare at it, wishing I could always buy more. When I was in college, a friend of mine shaved her head for $1000 and I was there to capture the moment her family saw her for the first time…. with my film camera. I was just always with a camera.

In 2005, I took my first in-person photography class through a local parks and rec department. I longed for more knowledge. In 2009, I got my first dslr camera. I learned how to shoot manual on this camera. This camera got me through auto-focus micro adjustment, back button focus and the like. I knew this camera like the back of my hand.

In 2012, I started Freckles and Frogs Photography. I loved every second of having a business. I had the best clients and the sweetest supporters. In the end, I had young kids and a full-time job, so in 2013, after 32 clients, too much coffee and much sadness, I closed my doors.

In 2013, I decided to focus on the creative side. I had to have something photography related to do, right? I started and completed a 365 project and upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark II. Man, I thought I was on top of the world. This was my first full frame camera. This is the camera where I learned and had the ability to shoot in Kelvin, which I use to this day. I began taking classes in my free time. Learning and gaining all of the knowledge I could. During these next years, I did free shoots for family and friends and worked hard to keep up my skills.

2022 was a whirlwind of a year. I did a large amount of education this year. I crafted a staycon (stay-at-home conference) of my own making. I paid for two mentorships, became a wedding photographer and had a bang up year! I started Stacey B Photography! I always knew when I closed Freckles and Frogs it would not be forever. :). But I never in a million years thought I would become a wedding photographer.

Right after I opened my business, a friend of mine sent me an innocent text asking if I would photograph his daughter’s wedding day.  I immediately said no. Are you kidding? That was way more pressure than I was prepared for.  He said he believed in me and to think about it.

Well I thought of nothing else until I told him yes.  I spent the next six months shadowing wedding photographers, going to weddings and putting in the work to ensure I could capture my friend’s daughters wedding day beautifully. I am a bit of a planner, goal setter and I want to ensure my clients are taken care of. I have a very thoughtful way of preparing for the day. I have handled some difficult situations, but I really really want my vibe to remain calm at all times.

His daughter’s wedding was my very first day as a wedding photographer.  Now, I am absolutely in love with wedding photography.  I love seeing the happiness and emotion in the day. I still thank my friend every time I talk to him, for helping my find a new place in this world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, numerous struggles!

On of my biggest was 2023…. I had a computer crash after shooting a large dance studio’s group and individual images. To make matters worse, I had a wedding in 5 days and was leaving on a long planned vacation right after the wedding. I bought a new laptop, had to set it up and learn a whole new system within a few days. We all have challenging years but those challenges make us into better business owners. This taught me to have a backup laptop at all times!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My photography journey was primarily seniors and families until 2022. Although I still take on those sessions, weddings have become my primary specialty. There are tons of fantastic photographers in Kansas City, and I love them all! Beyond the style in my images, I am known for my clear communication, calm direction, ability to handle difficult situations and the extra preparation time I take to ensure everything is ready. For example, if I haven’t been to or worked in the church or venue chosen by my couple, I make a special trip to physically see everything in advance. It just helps me plan and give the couple location options for their first look, their family formals, or their romantic portraits. Many of my reviews reference my clear and concise communication. I also have clients tell me that I capture not just how their wedding day looked, but the way their wedding felt. That is the biggest compliment!

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I thrive in team environments and possess strong collaborative and communication skills. Honestly, I love to support others and build up old relationships and make new relationships. Community over competition, always!
