Check Out Sierra Miller’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Miller.

Sierra Miller

Hi Sierra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my @goldn.curl Instagram account in mid-January of 2024. I aim to help girls and guys alike learn how to love, wear, and care for their natural hair (because it took me forever to embrace mine finally). Initially, I had gotten rid of all of my social media after having it for years. I saw it as wasting my time when I could be doing something more productive. However, in November, my husband and I made another cross-country move, and I wanted to re-download my social media to stay connected to friends I was moving away from. Though I knew that this time I wanted my social media to mean something instead of once again becoming a way I’d lose so many hours in the day. I wanted to create my little community where I could reach and teach others about something I was passionate about: everything about curly/natural hair. It took me forever to decide what kind of niche I wanted to exhibit, and I’ll be honest, figuring that out was the most challenging part in the beginning. I read this post from another creator: “What’s something that you could get up in front of a crowd and talk about for 30 minutes without any preparation?” I thought, “Well, I have no clue.” I asked myself that question for days without realizing the answer was right in front of my face the whole time (figuratively and literally). I have always had my mom or sisters ask me questions about my hair; strangers have approached me in public and asked me what products I use.

I was that friend in the friend group who did hairstyles for dances, parties, and weddings, and I even did my own wedding hair. Then I realized that I could talk about caring for my curly hair forever and delve into all its facets. So, I created @goldn.curl. A platform that allows me to do just that. I’ve made this space to share all of the curly hair facts I know, the products I do/don’t love, new products I try, new techniques I’ve discovered, and the cutest curly hairstyles for all seasons. The past few months have allowed me to grow so much in caring for my natural hair. I’m not a professional by any means; I’m learning as I go and sharing with you what I find. I can’t share all my tips and tricks here, so you have to follow @goldn.curl for more. Your hair is your trademark, so wear it big!

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As I mentioned, initially, finding a niche I wanted my platform to be about was the most challenging part. There are so many things that I like and would have enjoyed sharing. I had to tell myself that this page needed to be about something I was currently passionate about rather than something I wanted to be passionate about. I thought about other content creators and how they have to go about creating the content they share. For example, some set up tripods in gyms. More power to you, but that could never be me. Some travel to beautiful places and share their journeys. I wish I could, but I need more time and money. Some get to film in the comfort of their home, and this is where I resonated the most. After I nailed my niche, the creative side just came with it. I started creating my hair content in batches and sharing it every day. As I did, I’d see more and more other curly hair creators and be flooded with new ideas I’d want to bring to life. So far, I’ve been lucky not to suffer from any creative block. However, social media is a fickle place. It can be challenging to share a piece that you’re proud of or are excited about, and it strikes out, so to speak; it is getting fewer views or likes than you thought. I try not to think twice about it but rather use it to improve future content I share. It can also be discouraging to see other creators who appear to be doing “better” than I am, but again, I use it to set goals for where I want my @goldn.curl account to be.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for my big, crazy hair! I love sharing everything that has to do with it. The good, bad, and the ugly (trust me, it can get ugly). Learning to embrace your naturally curly or wavy hair and knowing the best ways to take care of it can be pretty difficult to start, but I love nothing more than when people reach out to me for hair help. Asking for things like beginner advice and essential products to use, specifics such as getting the top layer of your hair to curl as much as the bottom does, or for hairstyle inspiration for different events/trips/etc. I answer all the questions to the best of my ability and post the findings!

What sets me apart is how I’m genuinely myself in all the content I create. I’ve made a point to share all sides of natural/curly hair. This includes things like my failed hair experiments, what my hair looks like after it’s been pulled up in a bun all day (yikes), what happens to my hair if I don’t protect it at night, etc. It’d be easy to share only the good parts about embracing your natural locks because you can edit, clip, and post whatever you want, for goodness’ sake. But if I only shared the good, then that’s what everyone would compare their hair care journey to and would quickly be discouraged if they tried something I shared and it didn’t turn out the same because I only showed my good results. That’s not my goal here. I try to show that there are so many ways your natural hair can look and many mistakes that can be made (I’ve made them all!). But there are so many excellent/rewarding things that come from embracing the hair God gave you.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’m a middle child of five: two older sisters, a younger brother, and a younger sister. So, of course, I came as stubborn as possible. Being obstinate and hard-headed were my special skills. The only language I spoke was sass. My mom had to read books on raising “strong-willed” children when I came around. I was the type of kid who always asked you, “But why?” when given a command or chore. I needed a reasonable explanation; otherwise, I wouldn’t do whatever it was.

I grew up in church throughout my childhood, which has carried over from adolescence to adulthood. My faith in God and my relationship with Christ are essential to me, and I can’t imagine my life without them. I wouldn’t even want to imagine my life without it.

As a kid, my interests were natural disasters, crystals/rocks, baking, cooking, and reading. I used to tell my parents that I wanted to be a “rockologist” or geologist, as the educated community would say. I’d tell them I wanted to chase tornadoes and open my bakery to bake cupcakes all day. I had quite an eclectic interest pool.

And funny enough, I was always particular about my hair. I never wanted my ponytails to have bumps in them, and I never wanted flyaways poking out or tendrils falling. I would say “yes” to my mom whenever she asked if I wanted her to curl or straighten my hair because I thought it made me prettier. Once I was old enough to do my hair, I did all the same things to my hair, never giving my natural curls a chance until college. But wow, I’m so happy I did.
