Check Out Sarah Burton’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Burton.

Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Deliciously Twisted Bakery has been a dream in the making for as long as I can remember. Some of my favorite childhood memories are baking alongside my mom and grandma. We spent countless hours preparing holiday treats, and I felt such pride when I won blue ribbons at the 4-H fair, even earning an honorable mention for my banana bread. These moments have stayed with me, shaping my love for baking.

For years, I baked for family and friends, sharing my creations and enjoying in the happiness that food brings people. I’ve always secretly dreamed of opening my own bakery, but like many big dreams, I hesitated. What if I failed? What if I wasn’t good enough? What if I was too late to change the course of my life? After years of wondering “what if,” I knew I couldn’t look back with regret. So, I took the leap.

I consider myself an adventurous eater—someone always eager to try bold, unexpected flavor combinations. I wanted my bakery to reflect that spirit, blending timeless favorites with exciting, unconventional flavors. That’s when I came up with the idea for Deliciously Twisted Bakery: a place where every bite carries a playful twist that surprises and delights. Whether it’s an unexpected flavor pairing or a nostalgic treat with a modern twist, my goal is to make every bite an experience that brings a smile to someone’s face.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a new business has never been completely smooth sailing. Like with any new venture, there have been plenty of bumps along the way. Creating a business from the ground up has been both overwhelming and exciting, with a steep learning curve at every turn.

From building a website to developing a strategic marketing plan that includes social media, in-person events, and email/text messaging, the challenges were real. Scaling recipes to larger batches, mastering the science behind baking, understanding packaging, navigating laws and regulations—the list seemed endless. While I had a basic understanding of some of these areas, I quickly realized that there was so much more to learn in order to truly hit the ground running.

What has been both humbling and rewarding, however, is how much I’ve learned along the way. Every challenge has been an opportunity to grow and improve, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made so far. But I’m also mindful that the learning never truly stops. Every day brings new lessons, and that’s something I love as part of the adventure.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in a variety of baked treats, including cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and sweet quick breads. While I offer a core menu, I love adding seasonal flavors each month to keep things exciting. I’m known for my unique flavor combinations, like key lime cupcakes, butterscotch-chocolate chip cookies with sea salt, and strawberry-vanilla sandwich cookies.

I’m proud of every item I offer, because if it’s not delicious, it doesn’t make it to my menu. My goal is for every bite to be worth it, no matter the occasion. I believe what sets me apart is my fun, unexpected flavors and the option to choose regular or mini sizes for most of my treats, making them perfect for any event.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’ve always been a positive, friendly, and creative person. As a little girl, my pink room was filled drawings and craft projects, and I was constantly getting in trouble for talking too much. Creativity has always been a part of me—I’ve been a maker for as long as I can remember, whether it was drawing, making jewelry, knitting, baking, or something else. I just love to create.

I’ve always had an easygoing attitude, but I’m also highly organized and detail-oriented. I’m naturally social and love connecting with others, whether through conversation or shared experiences. Staying busy comes naturally to me—I enjoy experimenting with new recipes for my family, hitting a class at my favorite local cycling studio, getting lost in a good book, or spending quality time with family and friends.
