Today we’d like to introduce you to Racquel Charles.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Racquel Charles, I am a 28 year old mother of 2 girls Kendal and Kamren Brown. I am the owner of Kamera Boss Photography. I have always wanted to be a photographer. I started off assisting my art teacher at Paseo Academy, I had taken a photo that he liked. He then asked if he could draw it for me and from that day forward I knew I wanted to take photos. I received my first camera, a Canon T5 Rebel, as a Christmas gift in 2015. I didn’t know a lot about the photography world at first so I didn’t put my camera to use until 2018. In 2018, I decided that I wanted to take my photography career a step further. I came up with a name; I reached out to different photographers around my area and did a lot of research on how to use my camera to its fullest potential. I did community events to get practice. I would recruit people to let me take their photos for free. I collaborated with different photographers, makeup artists and boutiques. I also handed out as many business cards as I could just to get my name and photography business out. Today I am pretty well known and I offer a range of different photo options such as; family photos, boudoir, engagement/ save the date, graduation photos just to name a few.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I think with any person starting out in a new field, you run into some bumps or have things come up that you didn’t expect. I’ve had a few things come up that’s made me question if I really want to continue down this path. Then I see the work I produce and how excited my clients are when they receive their photos and the thought goes out the window. My biggest struggle would be Family, work, and life balance. Finding a medium between the three. I have two children that are very active in school, sports and Girl Scouts. Finding a balance where I could pursue my dreams as well as being in attendance for them was an extremely huge struggle, but when you have an amazing support system like the one I have it’s possible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a professional photographer, I specialize in a range of different forms of photography. My favorite and what I’m most known for would be family and creative photos. I love creating different themed photos as well as taking natural photos for families to hang in their living rooms. I’m proud of the fact that I’ve actually come this far with my photography. I almost gave up, but I didn’t, and I’m glad I didn’t. I have my own style when it comes to taking photos, like most photographers. I love to play around with colors and capturing off-guard photos of my clients. I rent out local studios around Kansas City, I take photos at parks inside of buildings and anywhere that allows photos. I am very passionate about the work I produce.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
