Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Marz.
Hi Paul, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I began my journey as an MC on the NYC underground Hip Hop scene in my early 20’s around 2007. I developed a true love for lyricism in those years, gaining experience at open mics, eventually headlining shows and then taking part in several tours both national and international. Fast forward to 2014, I would shift my focus from artist to mentor as I became more involved in the niche world of battle rap.
The rapid changes in Hip-Hop music on a commercial front altered the essence of the art form in my perspective, leaving me to look elsewhere for that passion. The heavy emphasis on lyricism I found in the world of battle rap lead me to dedicate my remaining efforts to salvaging this last bastion of true Hip-Hop expression. I am a co-owner of iBattleTV and our goal is to maintain a platform for up & coming artists to freely express themselves, to build their artistic careers and advance to the next level of life in general.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had decided to go the independent route from the beginning so I knew it wouldn’t be easy. Even being mentally prepared for challenges, I still faced plenty of dark times when I just wanted to quit. The 100’s of shows and open mics I had traveled to alone always stood out in my mind. Sometimes performing felt like a burden with the lack of support in my early years. Over time, as I aligned myself with like-minded people I found the path slowly getting easier to travel. It was when I stopped trying to do everything alone and worked as a member of a team that I began to see true progress.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a writer, lyricist, MC and producer specializing in Rap/Hip-Hop. I am most proud of co-owning and managing one of battle rap’s top leagues: iBattleTV.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
One major thing that was re-emphasized for me during this time is that it’s OK to just slow down and do nothing. It’s ok to pace yourself, be patient and careful. Sometimes we can get so caught up in the world trying to succeed, work and survive we don’t stop to appreciate simple things like friends and family. So I can say that the covid crisis helped me re-shift my focus back onto what’s important.
