Today we’d like to introduce you to Nissa Vibe.
Hi Nissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started dancing at the age of 5 years old copying routines from the music videos of some of my favorite artist such as Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, Ciara, and Missy Elliot. While attending Ervin Middle School, I joined their dance team in the 6th grade. That same school year I formed my own dance group with some of my friends and we went on to dance professionally as background dancers for a young rapper named BJ Wayz. We eventually started performing as our own dance group called Tru 2 This in local talent shows where we were began to get more exposure and went on to perform on bigger platforms such as the Bonner Bros Hair Show in Atlanta and many more. Our group separated as we got older and I did not join another dance team until I went to college. I was a member and choreographer on the Associate of Black Collegiates Dance Crew (ABCDC) at the University of Central Missouri. I attended school there for one year before I came back home to attend UMKC. During that time, I was diagnosed with Lupus and kidney failure which caused me to have to take a break from dancing to focus on my health. I was in the hospital for six weeks in 2012 fighting for my life. By God’s grace I made it through that rough period and had a full recovery. My kidney function went back to 90% function and I was starting to regain my life back.
I worked a corporate job for the next few years until I decided to take a leap of faith and move to Phoenix, AZ in 2018. It was there that I started back training in dance and reconnected with my love for the art. I eventually started teaching my own classes out there and began gaining a larger dance following. I lived there 3 years before moving back to Kansas City, MO in 2021. I had only been back home for 4 months before my oldest brother passed. His death impacted me deeply since we were extremely close and he was one of my biggest supporters. One day while grieving him and being very frustrated with feeling stuck in my dance career, I asked myself “What would RJ say if he was still here” and my response was “Nissa, we all know you can dance but where is your paperwork?” My brother was such a business man and the person I went to for anything related to legal or business processes. At that exact moment, I picked up my laptop and filed for my LLC for Nissa Vibe Entertainment.
Once I had officially created my business and filed it with the state of Missouri, things took off immediately for me. I already had dancers that had been coming to my classes in Kansas City faithfully who eventually became the first official members of my dance company. Since then we have performed at several events over the years and in multiple states across the country. As of today our team has expanded and our company name was recently changed to NVEntertainment. We are currently on our way to being one of the top dance agencies here in Kansas City. On April 1, 2024 my father passed and one of the last things he said to me was “Baby one of my biggest joys in life has been watching you chase your dreams” and from that moment I knew that I would NEVER stop doing that again no matter what life throws at me. NVEntertainment is here to stay!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur has been one of the hardest, but most rewarding challenges I have ever had to endure. I do not have anyone to look to that has done it already and am breaking records for my family. The biggest challenges I face is standing firm on my pricing because I have such a big heart. Another challenge I face is the constant battle of getting artist to pay my dancers their worth. A lot of times we are offered to be paid with “exposure” but the truth is that is just another way of asking dancers to perform for free.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional choreographer and owner of NVEntertainment Dance Company. We specialize in heels, hip hop, and praise dance styles. We are most known for our heels dance classes and live performances. I was recently nominated for Best Choreographer/Dance Instructor for the Kansas City People’s Choice Awards (KCPCA). In addition to my dance company, I also own my own 360 Photobooth business called NVE360. I am most proud of the growth in my dance company and that dancers from all over the city come to train and learn from me. What sets me apart from others is my perseverance and passion. I am maintaining a dance company and performing my own choreography while battling lupus and doing dialysis daily. I recently started the NV Foundation to raise awareness for lupus and kidney disease.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice would be to always remain a student at take dance classes of all genres. They way to get more opportunities in the dance industry is to network within the dance industry. By taking classes you meet other instructors and dancers while also strengthening your own talent.
