Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikky Weaves.
Hi Nikky, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into the beauty industry started long before I ever thought of it as a career. In high school, I began doing my own hair, and before I knew it, other girls were asking if I could do theirs too. Looking back now, I realize I had my very first salon right in front of my mom’s house. She supported me by letting me set up a space that looked and felt like a real salon, and that’s where my passion truly began.
I spent my freshman and sophomore years of high school building my skills and growing my clientele. After graduating, I enrolled at Lincoln University, but I never stopped doing hair. I turned the living room of my dorm into a salon, and thankfully my roommates were supportive. Within six months, I found myself spending more time doing hair than attending classes. That’s when I realized hair wasn’t just a hobby—it was my calling.
I made the decision to leave college and enroll in cosmetology school so I could fully invest in my passion. After graduating, I worked at Diamond Cuts for about a year. That experience gave me the confidence, knowledge, and foundation I needed to take the next step.
At just 22 years old, I opened my first salon with 10 other stylists working alongside me. Since then, I’ve built a brand that’s made an impact in both Kansas City and Atlanta. Along the way, I’ve expanded beyond hairstyling into education, mentoring other beauty professionals, and building salon suites for entrepreneurs. Today, I’m preparing to open my second salon suites location in Kansas City, with plans to expand into Atlanta for my third location.
My journey has taught me that success isn’t about where you start—it’s about recognizing your purpose, betting on yourself, and staying consistent even when the path isn’t traditional. I’m grateful for every step because each one prepared me for where I am today, and I’m excited for what’s next.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say my journey has been filled with obstacles because I’ve always looked at challenges as opportunities. I’ve never been afraid to take a chance on myself. Whether it was leaving college to pursue cosmetology, opening my first salon at 22, or expanding my business into multiple cities, I looked at each new chapter as something exciting rather than something to fear.
Of course, every business comes with lessons. I’ve learned how to lead people, make better business decisions, and adapt as I’ve grown. But I don’t allow fear to stop me from taking the next step. I believe that if you’re always waiting until everything is perfect, you’ll never get started.
That’s something I share with the women who attend my classes. I always tell them not to let fear keep them from chasing their dreams. You’ll figure things out along the way. Every opportunity I’ve taken has taught me something valuable, and I truly believe growth comes from being willing to bet on yourself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional hairstylist, educator, entrepreneur, and salon suites owner. I specialize in healthy hair, luxury extensions, and creating styles that not only look beautiful but also build confidence. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to build a strong clientele in both Kansas City and Atlanta while growing multiple businesses within the beauty industry.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the salons I’ve opened or the clientele I’ve built—it’s the lives I’ve been able to impact. Through my classes, I teach other hairstylists not only my techniques but also the business knowledge they need to build successful careers of their own. Seeing someone leave my class believing in themselves more than when they walked in is one of my greatest accomplishments.
I think what sets me apart is that I genuinely love seeing other people win. I’ve never been the type to gatekeep information. I believe there’s enough success for everyone, so I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned and helping others avoid mistakes I had to figure out on my own.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe the beauty industry is going to continue evolving from just providing a service to building complete brands. More hairstylists are realizing that doing hair alone isn’t the only source of income. We’re seeing more stylists launch product lines, open salon suites, create educational platforms, and use social media to build businesses that reach people around the world.
Over the next 5–10 years, I think education will become even more valuable. Clients want healthy hair, quality products, and stylists who are knowledgeable—not just talented. I also believe personal branding will continue to separate good stylists from great entrepreneurs. People don’t just book appointments anymore; they invest in people they trust and connect with.
I also see salon suites continuing to grow because they give beauty professionals the opportunity to own their businesses, create their own schedules, and build wealth on their own terms.
My goal is to stay ahead of those changes by continuing to educate, expand my salon suites, grow my hair care brand, and create opportunities for other stylists to succeed. I don’t just want to grow with the industry—I want to help shape where it’s going.
