Check Out Nicole Mulmore’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Mulmore.

Hi Nicole, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I never dreamed of doing hair, I tell people all the time this was the path that God chose for me and was birthed out of adversity. When I was a little girl my father was a hairdresser and would take care of my hair but his addictions, fast and reckless lifestyle caused my mom to move me and my three brothers to Kansas City. But when we moved I no longer had my father or my hairdresser, lol! Though my mom tried her best my hair was brittle, broken, unhealthy and couldn’t grow. We didn’t have much and grew up poor so going to the salon was a sacrifice. I used to ask my mom all the time if someone could do my hair, several tried but they all complained how coarse my hair was. I truly struggled with low self esteem because of my hair! Finally my mom took me to a man named Scott Thomas at Main Event hair salon and he spoke life to me and gave me tips on what to do with my hair. The experience was amazing being in that salon! Very inspiring and uplifting! I sat all day and watched those stylists create and it sparked something on the inside of me! When I was in the 8th grade there was a dance I wanted to go to and I asked my mother if I could go to the salon but she didn’t have the money so I locked myself in the bathroom for hours doing my hair and when I came out my mother couldn’t believe I did my hair she was so shocked it looked so good. I went to that dance and received so many compliments and that day I knew I wanted to make people feel as beautiful as I felt that day! From that day forward I have spent my career striving to make my clients look and feel like they can accomplish anything!! And not just through the pretty hair but through talks, laughs, prayers, tears, hugs, a listening ear and stories lots of stories to share. I have seen and prayed my clients through graduations, cancer, death, job promotions, losses and wins and they have seen me through the same. I wanted to build relationships it was more important to me than the money. And I have accomplished just that. Doing hair is not a job for me it’s service! I have been fortunate to have taught at local beauty schools to empower the next beauty professionals, I have also serviced women at the women battered shelter for women affected by domestic violence. I’ve owed 2 salons both were located in Independence, MO. I recently relocated to Image Studios in Lees Summit, MO to embark on the next phase of my career which is to focus and educate myself on hair loss which is fast growing within the black community. I’m enrolling in spring 2026 to become a certified tricologist and hair loss specialist.
Becoming a licensed beautician has been so rewarding I’ve learned that no matter where you are in life you can transform into a better you through faith and believing that with God all things are possible! And how you start is not how you finish! I couldn’t have imagined the full life I live but God’s plan is definitely better than anything I could have ever dreamed and the best is yet to come!!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely hasn’t been a smooth road! I grew up poor and I felt there weren’t many options for me but I was always very driven! In my 20s I was a single mother of 2 and I raised my nephew from the time he was 6 years old. They were my “why” and motivation and biggest support! A lot of times it was me and my babies with little to no help. They were with me long days at the salon! They practically grew up in the salon! While I was building and working to provide a better life for them there were days when I didn’t have enough to pay my bills! Even times where I only had just enough and remember talking to my children about things they wouldn’t be able to do cause I simply didn’t have the money. I was ready to give up and my kids would remind me of my dreams or help me to remember what I told them and I would pick myself up and keep going! I was mocked a lot of times by family and even some friends all I had were my dreams but a lot of times my reality didn’t match it and people would question me and say “Are you sure your supposed to do this?” I always said yes because I knew what God showed me but it hurt sometimes not to have the support from the people you love but God always surround me with people that prayed for me and helped me through! If it wasn’t for Him and the people He used to be a blessing to me I don’t know where I would be.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Licensed Cosmetologist and have been licensed for 19 years. I specialize in healthy hair care but I’m known for my silk presses and short hairstyles! Ive also created a “Short hair Quickweave” mostly geared for women who have experienced hair loss and desire to wear their hair. I create a hairpiece and blend it with the natural hair to give the illusion of their real hair. It always blesses me when I’m able to make my clients happy. Some had lost all hope and I’m thankful I’m able to give them something they can be pleased with. I believe what sets me apart is I’m willing to go the distance with my clients and try new things with them. I create an experience for every person that sits in my chair by providing a relaxing, safe environment for them. I never overbook! I work on one client at a time so their time is “their time”. I love for that to be personal and they have my undivided attention! They can kick their feet up while receiving a scalp massage at the shampoo bowl. I also provide steam deep conditioning treatments for those struggling to retain moisture or just to give them a spa experience. While most stylists believe time is money I believe that building relationships in this business is more important than anything! Most of my clients have been with me over 5 years. They become my sisters! I I love them!

What matters most to you? Why?
Building relationships and longevity. I like to think of my business as a good ole mom and pop shop! My clients are truly like family!
