Today we’d like to introduce you to Miss BabyDoll.
Hi Miss , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I started doing burlesque, I never dreamed I would make it what it is in my life today.
I have been on stage for 20+ years in various capacities. I currently still work for the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival as well as the Kansas City. Both of these festivals gave me the base foundation I needed to be confident when standing on a stage entertaining in a way I never had before. I was able to make the connection to the audience, I was able to make eye contact without shying away, I could portray a story in the span of 3 to 5 minutes, all the while taking my clothes off.
I was so incredibly fortunate that I had my theatrical training to start my burlesque journey. As soon as I was able to find my own passion in this art form, I was able to link everything I knew from one world to another.
I have worked for most major companies in Kansas City who produce shows and through them I have gained so many amazing people in life because of those connections. I saw the strength and positivity that these people were pouring into the community and I wanted to do the same.
Once I started to get my name out in the area, I started to gain traction with more and more folks supporting the shows I was in. I would have people asking when and where they could find me next. I am extremely grateful for the support I have gained through the last few years from performers and audiences alike, because without them I wouldn’t have had the courage to start out on my own.
That made me want to make a space that was welcoming and inviting to anyone who shared their love of burlesque and quality entertainment.
A place where every voice was heard and every one was listened to.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path that has lead me to producing my own shows as well as teaching has definitely had its challenges, but every challenge has proven to be rewarding in the end. Making the connections, networking, proving that I could walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
All of it was a struggle, not because of the people I was working with but more the environment. Finding a venue, creating the environment that people could find safely and see that I was in it for the art, making sure that EVERYONE on my team was paid. I made sure in the beginning that everyone was paid out before I saw a dime of profit because taking care of my fellow artists was more important than turning a profit. Things that people don’t think of behind the curtain when thinking of producing burlesque.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the owner of Brunch with BabyDoll, a monthly burlesque brunch at Fuego Cantina and Events in the West Bottoms.
I am known for my more classical style, my love for Dolly Parton and the passion I have for my community.
I am incredibly proud of my team that I work with at Brunch, and all of the people in the Kansas City Burlesque community. We make art and share it with the world, regardless of the pressure of the outside world. Typically my shows are themed and offer one or two variety acts per show as well to really breathe life into what the history of burlesque has offered for hundreds of years.
When asked what sets me apart from others, I think that’s a trick question. There’s no right answer. No matter what makes me different, I still share the same flame in my heart and goal as so many others. I am just a bit louder when it comes to shouting out in a crowd so our voices can be heard. I am incredibly fortunate that I get to use my shows as a place where those voices can be heard on a regular basis.
I’m a very unique individual. When asked to describe myself, I feel more confident answering.
I always like to say I am a mash up of Dolly Parton and Elvira. I love people and hospitality, I love older music from the 1950’s – 80’s, I live for vintage clothing but I also love the spooky and bizarre, and the things that go bump in the night.
What are your plans for the future?
I would love to expand to produce more shows, maybe bi weekly shows, teach more classes. I would also love to travel more and network with the entire industry. I want to meet everyone I truly can to expand on my knowledge as well as open more doors for my career and business.
As for my 1 year plan, I really would just like to get brunch as strong and healthy as I can to make insure it’s success and longevity.
