Check Out Michaella Ferguson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaella Ferguson.

Hi Michaella, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved fashion and knew it was what I wanted to pursue. However, I didn’t go to school for fashion, as I had just moved to Kansas City, MO towards the end of high school. I was so lost at that time that I alternatively took a job following in my dad’s footsteps building pickup trucks while simultaneously getting my business degree. I was unsure of what I was doing, but I knew one thing.

My ultimate passion was creating fully styled concepts and bringing them to life. Creating sets, putting the perfect looks together, and capturing that moment through photo or video is what I spent my time doing for years. On my days off as an autoworker, I was shooting or creating mood boards. Since then, I’ve worked many different jobs, while styling and creative direction remained the only constant for me.

After the whirlwind of 2020, I decided to finally build something for myself that allowed me to do all the things I love and created Michaella Marie Studio. This business is the creative outlet that I hope to grow into my life’s work. From creative direction to personal styling, I’ve been able to create amazing things with amazing people.

I now offer style boxes, allowing me to style clients from all over the world, which is one of the most incredible feelings.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel like any dream worth pursuing never has a smooth road. I have definitely had my fair share of struggles, even now. Being an entrepreneur is tough, especially when you’re building from the ground up on your own. There were many years when I was surrounded by people who made me feel like it was unrealistic to pursue fashion.

The whole balance at the beginning of working a full-time job and building your dream on the side is very hard (which I’m still doing). I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to be able to build the beginnings of my dream with Michaella Marie Studio. You have to bet on yourself, sometimes even before you have anything to show for it. I feel like my biggest struggles are always mental.

One of my biggest inspirations, Conna Walker (CEO of House of CB) once said “everything is figure-out-able.” I’ve always tried to keep that mentality with all of my struggles. I believe the biggest challenge for me has been believing I’m worthy of pursuing my dream. I still work on this daily, but I know many creatives or business owners can relate to that mental block on some level.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the wardrobe stylist and creative director for Michaella Marie Studio. I specialize in on-set styling for photoshoots and video work, personal shopping, and creative direction. At this point in my career, I’m most proud of the work I’ve been able to do with clients and creatives from all around the world.

When I first launched my style box service, I was able to work with my first Canadian client, as well as a client in LA. My LA client did a shoot with the looks I styled for her at the Beverly Hills Hotel and to have just launched and already see those photos filled my heart with so much excitement. Something I feel really sets me apart from others is my style.

I tend to work with a lot of bright colors, vibrant patterns, and vibe with what has been called a “music video” type feel, which I love. In terms of services, I offer rental pieces for clients which I feel has definitely set me apart in Kansas City.

I have all kinds of pieces and props available for clients to use for photoshoots, events, or even trips and this has become my most popular service yet.

What matters most to you? Why?
While fashion is what I’ve always wanted to pursue, another passion of mine has always been to inspire others and spread love.

It may sound cliché, we’ve heard it said a million times but the value of being kind to ourselves and others is immeasurable. I’ve experienced my share of bullying and have been through things that could’ve changed the way I saw myself. I feel like that’s universal for all of us.

But instead of letting those experiences ruin me, I’ve taken the power back so I can be the girl my younger self wanted to see, someone that reminds everyone that they truly matter, they are loved, and promote a safe place for everyone to live their best lives. I try to bring that feeling into any and all experiences one might have throughout my business.

This question is actually perfectly phrased for my latest project with Michaella Marie Studio, which is “Kindness Matters.” I hope to grow this project in the future, but for now, I post monthly flyers throughout downtown KC that feature “pick-me-up” type quotes, as well as a little discount on Michaella Marie Studio services. that people are able to take with them.

Sometimes, all we need is that little reminder to be a little easier on ourselves or spread a little positivity to those around us.
