Today we’d like to introduce you to Miah Allison
Hi Miah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Like many artists- the beauty industry was an outlet for me. I grew up around addiction and poverty- I loved to learn and grow. I found comfort in watching tutorials (when YouTube first came out) on my family’s soundless desktop computer. I decided to stay in my hometown for college after my parents relapse, two years later I wanted to pursue a life of passion and purpose- so I enrolled in beauty school.
I finished in 2018, after taking a break to have my son. After having my daughter a year later, I became an independent stylist leading to two magazine features, one being named one of the top 30 colorists under 30 by Beauty Launchpad in 2019. Six months later, I opened my first salon in the same month I became a single mother.
Through that life changing year- I kept climbing and let go to let God. I became a Freelancer for Coty in 2020 in hopes to grow my business in a new area. Three years later I decided to move to Kansas City.
I’ve been in KC for a year now, THIS MONTH. How inspiring it is to be contacted by VoyageKC after quite the journey. I feel like I’m just getting started! I am now a Freelance Makeup Artist for NARS Cosmetics and Charlotte Tillbury while growing my business- Primpin KC, a glam squad ran by talented artists that offer not only makeup/beauty services, but an experience. I have been blessed to have worked with such amazing brands and artists since moving, I am still so in awe to be interviewing today. I hope when inspiring artists and single mothers read my story, they see God and they see the possibilities.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
NOT AT ALL. Every entrepreneur knows with every big win, comes many small loses. As a first generation business owner and cycle breaker, I have to remind myself daily that there is no true blueprint. The first salon I opened was actually across the street from the original building- the weekend my chairs and wash bowls were being delivered I had a disagreement with the Landlord- I had to pivot so quickly! I had a delivery in less than 48 hours!! I signed the lease to the my first shop the next morning.
Choosing my career has also taught me to choose myself. It’s not easy- but it’s possible. And so very worth it! Growing up watching those I loved succumb to addiction was heartbreaking. I always knew that no matter how difficult it was I would follow my dreams and let God lead the way. There’s still days I cry in prayer, but there’s never days I go without.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I see myself as an ARTIST. Focusing on hair and makeup, but placing art in everything I touch. I specialize in weddings, events, and education. I bring the artistry and the hype to my clients- I’m known for being THAT GIRL. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and how much I have to give. I love to educate other artists and clients! After graduating, I taught a Makeup & Marketing class at my cosmetology school that was so inspiring. I believe that there are wins out here for us all- it’s all about not letting yourself be the obstacle. Which is what lead me here, to Kansas City. I have family in the beauty industry that have really pushed me to blossom here. Together plus two others, we have rebranded into Primpin KC. Where we bring all of our talents in one! Our 2025 goal is to really touch the lives of women through beauty. We all deserve to feel beautiful! We’re starting with “Makeup & Mimosas” parties every month to celebrate women, contour, and all things beauty. Through hyping up our clients while we skin prep and teach- our applications and classes are all individually unique. We take pride in bringing the beauty from the inside out!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk taking is ESSENTIAL. I know no other way! Let’s talk about how I took a risk to move here as a single mother and a year later I’m being recognized as an inspiring business owner in my industry. That says in all!! Life is for risks. We risk to love, we risk to explore, we risk to learn and grow. As a single mother- first generation business owner every decision I make is a risk. I could risk it all and clock in to a 9-5, but one thing I won’t ever risk is my potential and my happiness.
