Check Out Mayra Flores’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Flores.

Hi Mayra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Mayra, a permanent makeup artist in Kansas City. I create soft, natural enhancements that make women feel even more confident. My journey hasn’t been linear or glamorous, but it’s been real.

I didn’t grow up knowing exactly what I wanted to do, but I’ve always been creative and naturally drawn to anything that lets me transform something into its best version. Permanent makeup didn’t come to me as an instant “this is my calling” moment. What it was, though, was a chance. It was a way out and a way forward during a time in my life when I desperately wanted better for myself.

From one day to the next, I decided to reach out, sign up for training, and take the leap. I was tired of being tired, and I told myself: this is it. There was no plan B. Because of that, I committed fully. In the beginning, I wasn’t naturally good, and I questioned myself a lot. I thought about quitting many times, but I never did. I kept practicing, kept learning, kept investing in myself.

Somewhere in that consistency and determination, everything shifted. PMU became something I’m genuinely proud of, something I stand behind with love. When my clients tell me it changed their life or that they wish they’d done it sooner, when their eyes fill with tears, it reminds me why I stayed committed. Creating confidence for women through my hands will forever be the heart of what I do.

I’ve grown into a confident, highly skilled artist, but I’ll always remain a student, constantly learning, improving, and expanding with this industry. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and even more excited for what’s ahead as I step into the next level of my career and build the future I know I’m meant for.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, the hardest part of this whole journey was realizing there are no shortcuts. You really have to go through the uncomfortable stages, messing up, practicing, learning, there’s no skipping any of it.

And what hit me the most was understanding that no one is going to push you. No one’s going to check in to make sure you practice, study, or take the time to master the small things. It all has to come from you. Showing up for myself, even when no one was watching, became one of the biggest lessons that really clicked.

I started this career when I was 20, and I’m 25 now. You grow a lot in those years. I had to mature not just as an artist, but as a person. Learning how to trust my decisions and intuition has been a challenge and a blessing at the same time.

Every time I chose to sit down and learn instead of avoiding it, every time I practiced when I didn’t feel like it, every time I stayed committed even when it was overwhelming, that’s what moved me forward. Those challenges shaped me, and they taught me how to rely on my own discipline and growth as an artist and in my personal life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a permanent makeup artist specializing in hyper-realistic, soft, natural enhancements. I do brows, lip blushing, eyeliner and scar/stretchmark revision. What I love most about this craft is how it blends creativity, precision, and science with confidence.

I’ve built a reputation for being extremely detail-oriented, patient, and intentional with every client. People come to me because they want honesty and an artist who truly cares about long-term results. I take the time to educate, explain, and make sure clients fully understand every step before we move forward. Nothing I do is rushed or copy-and-paste, everything is customized.

What sets me apart is my commitment to real mastery. In a field where many artists skip steps, I’m dedicated to fundamentals, color theory, skin science, proper technique, and continuous education. Details matter, and I invest in my craft because my clients deserve work that lasts and heals beautifully.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If you’re just starting out, my biggest advice is to truly respect and dive deep into this craft. Permanent makeup is an art and a science, and it deserves real dedication when you are tattooing people’s faces.
Take your time learning the fundamentals, practice on latex not people, and invest in proper education, it will show in your work.
Consistency is everything. The artists who grow are the ones who treat this like a real craft, not a quick side hustle.
