Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Clark.
Hi Maurice, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a worker in my father’s clothing store in Texas. After school, I would go help him and I seen how he did things and interacted with the customers etc. I immediately was hooked! My first business was an online network marketing business and I was terrible at it. Then after a period of time, like anything else I became quite good at recruiting which I still have to do now as a barber salon owner. I currently own a barber salon by the name of The Town Unlimited, formerly known as Rich Cuts.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been anything but smooth, however, I wouldn’t change any of it. Some of the struggles then and even now is finding and keeping good talent. I’m owner of the barber salon but I don’t cut hair, so my job is to get not only the best possible talent but always try and pull the best out of talent at all times. Another big struggle is finding my niche in the barber salon world of Kansas City. Kansas City is full of talented business owners and shop owners and everything else so I had to kind of carve out my own lane in this business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an author of two books as well as an actor. I’m currently in the process of a role as a dirty cop in a series based in Kansas City, I just finished a role as a thief in a short comic film and a secret agent in another film that all release this year. I like to think that I specialize in motivation of others lol. I believe I’m most known for being a businessman and author. I’m most proud of the fact we have gained notoriety as one of the shops in KC to go to as well as the respect and love from other shop owners. We’ve received nothing but love and I’m extremely proud of that.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
There are no guarantees in life, so to some degree everything in life is a risk. In my opinion, you cannot be successful, or a trendsetter or trailblazer without taking a risk. In my mind, and I’m sure in the mind of every other entrepreneur, we can live with taking the risk and losing, but we can’t live without taking certain risks at all. I’ve taken several risks, one of which is children’s book that is about to go into production. I’ve never done anything like this before, I don’t know how it will be accepted or received, but it’s a risk that I absolutely have to take. I hate the thought of getting older and wished I would have done something.
