Today we’d like to introduce you to Markita Sandifer.
Hi Markita, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had perfect skin until I was 14 years old. I dealt with acne from 14 til I was 35. Some years were better than others but not by much. I used makeup to cover up my skin. When I discovered what an Esthetician was, I knew it was for me.
I had gone through a tumultuous marriage, divorced, and had nothing but the clothes on my back, and two kids. I felt like I had lost everything I worked for and the future I pictured for myself. I held on to my faith and God. I watched God fast forward my life. With the help of a great support system aka my mom, dad, grandma, and friends. I got a new job, and moved me and my two children into my mother’s home. Finished a business degree, while working full-time.
Then went to Esthetician school at night while working days. Got my license. Moved to my own tiny apartment. Covid hit, I was unable to get hired by a MedSpa because everyone wanted someone with MedSpa experience. I went back to school to get a degree as a Registered nurse. I now have finished my Nursing prerequisites, waiting to get accepted to the Nursing Program. My goal is to become an Aesthetician Nurse. I know how it feels to try everything to clear your skin and nothing works. To be judged because of your imperfections.
And how to not let your physical define you. I want to be able to make a deeper impact on changes to the skin, without being limited by my current title. I want to help people be comfortable and secure in just their skin. My spa suite will open on Aug.11 2022 at the Wax BeautiBar in Mission, KS. I will be providing services specifically geared towards anti-aging, acne, and hyperpigmentation.
I will also offer body contouring to help get reduce stubborn fat. Makeup and waxing services will be available as well. Coming from feeling stuck to being able to live your passion is just the most freeing, grateful feeling I could ask for. I am literally living my dream.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge for me was working full-time while going to Esthetics school. Night-time classes, not getting home til 9:30 or 10 pm and my kids are sleeping and didn’t really get to see them much, except for weekends.
Then trying to break into the business but being offered a wage that I couldn’t live off of and take care of my children.
Having to work my full-time job as a Senior Underwriter and maintain my craft has not been easy. It’s tiring but it’s worth it. It has taught me balance is important.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Esthetician-person who is knowledgeable about nature and appreciation of beauty, especially in art. I specialize in facials. I focus on targeting my client’s skin issues that are affecting them in their daily lives. Some people want to reduce acne and inflammation, look younger and revitalized, or clear hyperpigmentation. Some want all 3 and that can be done too. I am most proud of the PCOS clients that have come to me with severe acne, and after multiple sessions and following my product recommendations they were clear in about a 3-month period.
I saw their confidence and appreciation for their skin grow. I made an impact on their lives, that made me proud. What sets me apart is that I have been where they were for years, I know how it feels to have acne and no help with it. I also have gained immense knowledge on how to treat and beautify the skin internally and externally through my own struggles and journey. Everyone’s skin is unique and skin care is not a one size fits all regimen. I take time to analyze and understand my clients lifestyle. This allows me to service their skin with using targeted treatments to get optimal results.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
Risk taking is necessary to achieve your goals. Putting all my money into my business is a risk when I am taking care of two children. Having to fund your business until you get enough clientele is necessary. You have to be your biggest supporter. It’s all or nothing.
It’s been a major risk stepping out of the box and doing what I love to do.
