Today we’d like to introduce you to Marjorie Dodd.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
‘Marjorie Fisher Art’ has been a work in progress since 2007. I’ve loved creating art for myself and for others since high school, propelling that love into a career in art education until I chose to stay home with my 1 year old daughter. My husband and I built an art studio for me in our basement so that I can continue creating (mostly when my daughter is asleep). I recently started advertising to make small pet portraits on my social media and the response has been overwhelming! I am incredibly grateful to do what I love and still be able to be present as a parent. I currently am focused on making watercolor cards and pet portraits and enjoy the variety of sweet pets I get to help immortalize.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It is wild to me that this year has been so abundant to me as an artist. I always wanted to purely be an artist, but society tells creatives that there is no money in art, despite the wonderful support from my parents to pursue my dreams. As an art educator, I felt I was constantly having to defend and advocate for my subject–it was so disheartening at times and made me lose a lot of my passion for art for a while. Taking a step away from teaching and focusing just on my own studio practice has been a breath of fresh air.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist, I create work at my studio at home. I have primarily always worked in painting, both watercolor and acrylic paint. I love to make portraits (both human and pet portraits) as well as watercolor greeting cards. Lately, I have been specializing in creating small watercolor pet portraits which have been such a joy to make. I am so proud that I can fulfill my dream of being an artist and help contribute to my family while doing something that brings me joy and helps me make special pieces for others. I work hard to continue growing my technique and making sure each art piece I make is up to my high standards–I love helping others find a way to make their vision come to life through art.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The art industry has changed so much since I started. I remember having to use magazine pictures as reference photos for work and only having one computer in each classroom. Digital art became so popular after college but it never felt like something I was called to. AI image generation feels like an alien presence in the art industry. I feel even more called to keep creating artwork by hand, and think there might be more artists who find their way back to handmade artwork rather than diving deeper into the digital age.
