Today we’d like to introduce you to Margot Turner
Hi Margot, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started as an athlete. Went to college to play soccer to quickly realize something didn’t feel right. I wasn’t wanting to try in anything to do with school or soccer. My family is pretty creative/artistic, and I knew that I had a small gift as well. Trying to figure out what it was, was the hard part. I quit my academic studies and applied to cosmetology school and the rest is history. I had found my creativity in making people feel beautiful. I have been in the industry for going on 6 years now, and it definitely hasn’t been easy getting to where I am now. There has been a lot of trusting the process, with a couple side hustles to get me through. Word of mouth has been my best friend, and I couldn’t have gotten here without my clients trusting with me. So much love for them.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth road? Absolutely not. Now that’s just for me, some might say otherwise. As a female in the industry starting out is hard. Especially when starting a family in the midst of trying to get your career started. My first pregnancy was a loss at 40 weeks. This happened in the first year behind the chair. Getting back was even harder because then covid hit and we were off for so long. After the long-awaited opening back up of the businesses, my workplace became toxic. I left and started booth renting shortly after. If I had made any dumb decisions, that was one of them. I struggled for a year. My husband had to be out of town for weeks at a time to be able to pay bills. At this time, we had our 2nd child, so I was working only two to three days a week, with barely any clients, paying full time rental fees. I felt like if it wasn’t one thing, it was another. My world was chaos.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a hair stylist. I do things like haircuts, blonding in many forms, colors, and extensions. I specialize in blonding and am known for my lower maintenance blonding, which helps clients go longer in between appointments! I am most proud of the fact that I am opening my own salon in the heart of Gladstone, MO and the patience I have had to have during this whole process. In this industry nothing sets me apart from others that are also in this line of work. We are ALL hustlers, we are ALL go getters, and we ALL work hard for what we want out of our career!
What are your plans for the future?
My plan for my future is to be running a successful business that’ll be opening very soon. I am looking forward to the new people I will be meeting and working with, as well as, just becoming the strong businesswomen, I never thought I could be.
