Check Out Malcolm Gerard’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malcolm Gerard

Hi Malcolm, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Malcolm Gerard. Simply put, I am a creative. I worked in the audio industry for 5+ years, from producing to DJ’ing & engineering. I made a random decision to buy a camera, on May 28th 2022. Unplanned, just woke up and said today is the day. Self taught, on how to operate the camera. Studied YouTube tutorials and videos on how to work the controls, learned technical terms and how ISO’s and Fstops work. Pretty much the basics on how the camera operates. Practiced on my colleagues & family until I learned the basics. Then, took the next step and started learning about symmetry and the term cinematography. I studied it daily, watched movies all day and all night, I mean I’ve always LOVED movies but once I got the camera I started watching films differently , as studying materials, seeing how each scene was framed, the lighting, the angles. It’s literally so much that goes into being a cinematographer, but I studied it, still do. I had the opportunity to meet Roger Deakins, in 2023’ an iconic cinematographer who was a major part of my favorite film “Sicario”. I grabbed some knowledge from him added it into my collection and went back to the drawing board. I’ve always been into athletics since I was a child, always been in competitive sports from elementary to college. So me going into sports media was a perfect fit, and incorporating cinematography into sports has become my niche. I’ve been doing lots of football camps, from youth, to elite athletes this summer. I’ve worked with Synergy sports as a camera operator for the Nike EYBL tourney. Which was very fun. I watch NBA games way different now, knowing the work it takes following the basketball with a big camera, lol. To say the least, I’m very grateful to be able to capture moments visually through my own perspective.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road, you’ll get ignored, told no, overlooked. It’s a grind, and being a freelance videographer you have to do a lot of leg work, meaning that you’ll be scouting a lot of events, connecting with corporations, connecting with athletes, sending emails. This is a daily routine to find work in the area. But it’s a a beautiful process, once you start seeing progress.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Before I picked up the camera, as I said previously I’m known in the local music scene. I’ve worked with a lot of artists in the music industry aswells, aside from that I am the founder of Tha Hustlers Media Group, we specialize in sports journalism/media. We are not only limited to sports though, we cover a vast variety of topic, and are always open to new creative endeavors.

I’m most proud of the past 3 months of connections and work that I’ve accumulated with Synergy Sports, Flexxwork Sports MGMT, You Are Athlete and more. Working with athlete’s of all tenure from Highschool to professional. Such as Isiah Pacheco, Mecole Hardman, Chris Jones, Khalil/Carlos Davis, the Kansas City Chiefs staff and more. It’s been a great summer for the company as far as brand awareness goes.

What sets me apart from others is my Eye for detail, my work ethic, my dedication to deliver a top tier product to the masses. My clients know I don’t half do anything, I take pride in what I put my name on. I treat every shot with respect, I want the viewer to feel something when they watch my content, I look to evoke emotion.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Media will continue to lead the race, we as humans connect with what we see visually, whether negative or positive we still WATCH. So I see media and content growing tremendously, it will be more creative, more thought provoking and more entertaining than ever before.
