Check Out Lauren-Ashley Walls’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren-Ashley Walls

Hi Lauren-Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up singing in the church as a very shy, quiet child. My dad, Rev. Martinous Walls, who is an AME Pastor and my mom, Vernon Walls would encourage me to sing; but I never thought I would be singing as an adult in this capacity.

I’m originally from St. Louis and moved to Kansas City in 2019. Shortly after, I started working at a karaoke bar hosting karaoke and began to fall in love with my voice again. I have always been told that I have a beautiful voice and should sing professionally but it was not until I started singing every week at karaoke that I began to believe it. Countless times I was asked if I had original music out, or if I sang anywhere else professionally. After a year or so of hearing this, I decided to pursue music.

I sang for the first time at an open mic in September 2022 and was extremely nervous. Once I got over my nerves, I realized performing was a part of me. It was comfortable in an uncomfortable way, it was fun, it was exciting, it was invigorating. Most of all, it was engaging. I got to share a piece of me with the audience; something I never thought I would do, let alone enjoy. It was this performance that solidified that I should be sharing my talent and gift with people.

In January 2023, I started my band, now known as, “The Songbird Experience.” Our first show was a birthday celebration for me and I hosted an open mic. Since then, we have gone on to perform at 27 different venues in Kansas and Missouri. Although it can be stressful at times trying to curate a show, coordinate band member schedules and fit in rehearsals, there is something intrinsically rewarding about singing to an audience. To this day I am still met with wonder when people hear me sing for the first time. I love the emotion that is evoked in people when I sing, it lets me know I am doing something right.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Surprisingly, it has been fairly easy for the most part! I have had some transition with band members in an attempt to find the right sound and blend but it has definitely been worth it. I have found musicians and vocalists that are extremely gifted in their craft and together we create a blend that is unmatched.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My band consists of my Music Director, Aaron Mitchell on main keys, Clarence Copridge on auxiliary keys, T. A. Rell on drums, and Tamara White on background vocals. We perform a variety of genres including RnB, Pop, Gospel, Neo-soul and Soul. I think what sets us apart is our creative chemistry, versatility and willingness take risks. Each member of my band plays an integral part in creating an artistic musical experience that resonates with every listener and makes every performance unforgettable.

I am proud of the accomplishments I’ve made on the KC music scene thus far such as performing at KC Pride and on Fox 4 Great Day KC. I look forward to releasing more original music and I hope to continue this musical journey in the Greater Kansas City area and beyond!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
People might be surprised to know that I have three degrees, the highest being a doctorate from Maryville University. I am also a foster parent and minister.
