Today we’d like to introduce you to King Taji.
Hi King, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
The story of King Taji. Where do I start? Growing up in the unforgiving streets of Southern California, I grew up fast. A brilliant & gifted kid with a troubled past. I was very good at sports, but it was tough to focus with trouble at home and beef in the streets. So when I went to play college football in ’08, the recession hit. And I had to choose to drop out and help my family or continue playing football. I chose to help my family. Things got a little crazy, and I ended up in Kansas City in 2010. Having family in KC my whole life, I’ve visited before but living here was very different, and I had to adjust. In 2014, it hit me with a drug charge that derailed my life and put me in a deep hole for a long time. To this day, I feel that my rights were violated, and I was the victim of discrimination. But since then, I’ve been heavily focused on my music, staying far away from trouble. Launched my clothing line called “Born 2 Hussle Clothing” and started the record label ” Born 2 Hussle ENT”. I’ve used the hard lessons from my past as fuel, and I hope people can be influenced/inspired by my story. I am a Man, A father, an Entrepreneur, & an artist. Who was dealt a bad hand and made the best out of it, I was Born 2 Hussle.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It started in California. I grew up with raw knuckles as a kid. Every day at school, a new kid wanted to fight me for whatever reason. On the same day, the kid will bring his older relatives to the school, and I’d have to fight them too. I grew up fast, but it prepared me for what life had in store for me ahead. At one point, I lost communication with my daughter’s mother for years. It was tough not knowing how my daughter was doing, but I was going through trials and tribulations at the time and was in a middle of a drug charge I was fighting. It was one of the most challenging times in my life, being unable to see, hear, or talk to my daughter. Not knowing how she was doing or anything was crazy, I thank God for bringing her back into my life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a jack of all trades. I came up with a limited budget. I learned how to do a lot of things myself. I am a songwriter, engineer, and business owner. I’ve mixed and mastered all my songs, which takes an incredible amount of time and patience. Sometimes, everything sounds trash at one point. And you just want to throw the whole project away, but when that happens, I’ve learned to put everything down, chill out, take a break, and then come back stronger. I have two tracks I’m most proud of, the first one being my first official collaboration with The Game. We worked on a song called “Play Hard,” I reached out to him, and he hit me back, wanting to work. It felt good to do a track with someone you grew up listening to heavily on the west coast. The second one is a track called ” Better Days,” definitely one of my better tracks sitting at 40k views. I was in a different element when I recorded this track.
