Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaelani Orrick.
Kaelani, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Nearly 8 years ago, photography started as something simple — just a mama who loved taking photos of her babies. I was always the one with a phone or camera in hand, capturing the little moments… messy faces, big laughs, tiny hands wrapped around mine.
I’ve always loved photographing people — the connection, the emotion, the realness of it all. But back then, I never imagined it would become what it is today.
One day, my husband surprised me with my very first camera. And that was it. Something clicked (literally and figuratively ). I started practicing every chance I got — on my kids, on friends, on anyone who would let me. I studied light, emotion, movement. I fell in love with telling stories through images.
What started in my living room and backyard has grown into something bigger than I ever dreamed.
Now, I have the honor of capturing families in every season of life, documenting love stories on wedding days, and empowering women through boudoir sessions. From tiny newborn fingers to tear-filled vows to confident, radiant brides — I get to freeze moments that matter.
Photography started as a hobby.
It became a passion.
And now, it’s my purpose.
And I’m so thankful it all started with that very first camera.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There was a season where I stepped away from weddings completely. I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and honestly thought I was losing the passion that once lit me up. Burnout is real — especially when you pour your whole heart into something.
On top of that, comparison crept in hard. Living and working in Kansas City means being surrounded by SO many incredibly talented photographers. It’s easy to look around and feel like you’re falling behind or not measuring up.
But here’s what I’ve had to learn (and relearn over and over):
✨ My work is not supposed to look like anyone else’s.
✨ My perspective, my heart, my connection with people — that’s what makes it mine.
✨ The clients meant for me will find me because of that.
Growth hasn’t been linear. There have been pauses, doubts, tears, and a lot of questioning. But there has also been resilience, healing, and a deeper love for what I do.
I’m still here. Still learning. Still showing up. And more confident than ever that my work — exactly as it is — is what sets me apart.
If you’re in a season of doubt too, you’re not alone
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a lifestyle photographer specializing in families, weddings, and boudoir. My work focuses on genuine connection, emotion, and storytelling — not just posed photos, but the real moments in between. I aim to create images that feel warm, timeless, and true to who you are.
I’m especially known for helping people feel comfortable in front of the camera. Most of my clients tell me they were nervous beforehand, but ended up having so much fun and feeling completely at ease. That’s incredibly important to me, because when you’re relaxed, your photos reflect your true personality and connection.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me to document some of the biggest and most intimate moments of their lives — from wedding days to growing families to empowering boudoir sessions. Being invited into those spaces is something I never take lightly.
What sets me apart is the experience I provide, not just the final images. I guide my clients every step of the way, help with planning, posing, timelines, and creating a comfortable atmosphere so you never feel awkward or unsure of what to do. I also focus on true-to-life editing, emotional storytelling, and capturing the small details that often become the most meaningful over time.
Above all, my goal is for you to walk away not only with beautiful photos, but with memories of a session that felt easy, fun, and genuinely special.
What does success mean to you?
Success, to me, isn’t measured by numbers, awards, or how busy my calendar is — it’s measured by impact.
Success is when a client cries happy tears seeing their gallery for the first time.
Success is when a mom tells me, “I never feel beautiful in photos, but I do here.”
Success is when couples trust me to capture one of the most important days of their lives.
It’s also personal. Success is being able to do what I love while still showing up for my family — not missing the moments that made me fall in love with photography in the first place.
As a photographer, success means growth without losing heart. It means creating work that feels authentic to me, not work that simply follows trends or compares to others. It’s building a business rooted in connection, trust, and storytelling.
Most of all, success is knowing that years from now, these images will still matter — that I helped preserve memories that can never be recreated.
Success isn’t perfection.
It’s purpose, balance, and the privilege of doing meaningful work. ✨
