Check Out Josie Henderson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Henderson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been behind a camera since I was a Junior in High School, taking images of landscapes or random buildings in the towns I’ve lived. I’ve always loved looking through design magazines and at one point thought I might want to become an Interior Designer, however, I didn’t know where to start. Back in 2019, my boyfriend and I decided to start a video company that specialized in Real Estate.

About three months in, we got asked if we did photos as well. It had been about five years since I picked up a DSLR and thought, why not give it a try. I was looking for a creative outlet and I knew real estate wasn’t going anywhere, why not try to make a little money as well. I had re-discovered my love for photography. My first few homes were cringeworthy to say the least. Who knew how much went into not just taking real estate images but editing those images as well? From that point, I took online classes, read multiple books, watched webinars, the whole nine yards to gather as much information as I possibly could to better my images. There are so many different techniques and avenues you can go down to get that perfect image, you just have to find one that fits you and your style.

Fast forward to now, I focus on interior photography for builders, landscape companies, interior designers, and the luxury real estate market. However, little houses need love too so I do still have a few clients who are not in the luxury market. I’ve always said that one day I will work for a magazine and my images will be on the covers. Recently, I had images featured in the new design magazine, DesignKC. That was a tremendous accomplishment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To say it has been a smooth road would be an understatement. Photography is a very subjective industry. Clients in every niche have their specific needs and each photographer has their own style. Finding the niche that speaks to you and makes your soul happy is very important because you will be living and breathing it for a while. It’s also important to have a good understanding of running a business. I grew up with parents who were Realtors as well as entrepreneurs, so I knew the industry but I wasn’t as familiar with starting a business from scratch, so I’ve been very lucky in the sense that I have parents I can rely on for advice.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently, I photograph all things real estate from houses to senior living facilities to large property developments. I wouldn’t say there is one specific area of real estate photography that I specialize in but I lean more towards the projects and clients that I get to have creative freedom. It’s when my best work comes out. I have quite a few clients that will explain what our images will be used for and then let me just do my thing. To this date, I’m most proud of officially having my images published in a magazine. I think that one thing that sets me apart from others is my attention to detail and customer service. I enjoy providing excellent customer service, building those amazing working relationships, and being an extension of our client’s brand.

Any big plans?
Plans for the future include furthering my career in interior and architecture photography. While I do enjoy real estate photography, being able to slow down and capture the mood and feeling of a specific space in an image is so enjoyable and rewarding. I’m really looking forward to the constant learning that comes along with the world of photography.
