Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Williams
Hi Joshua, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up watching my father draw scenes from the Bible, which inspired me to start drawing at age four. While he focused on biblical imagery, I was drawn to superheroes, manga, and cartoons, eventually creating my own characters and developing a passion for storytelling. As my interest grew, I explored past artists and historical art periods while honing my skills with colored pencils, Copic markers, and digital artwork. Creating album covers and character designs allowed me to gain many clients for work, further expanding my artistic reach.
A friend, Lynell Diggs, encouraged me to try painting, and after much persuasion, I did—starting with a King Tut piece featuring a cybernetic eye. Since then, painting has become my focus. I’ve exhibited my work in various art shows, museums, and festivals, including The African American Jazz Museum, Berkeley Art Garden, 80 Santa Fe Art Gallery and ArtsConnect. My art has been featured in The Evolution Magazine and installed in venues like Urban Restaurant and Aizen Root Remedy Cafe. Currently, I’m working on a Patrick Mahomes mural for a barbershop.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve faced numerous struggles along the way, from doubting myself and struggling to balance my roles as a father, husband, and business owner, to dealing with financial hardships. The losses of friends and loved ones have been painful, yet they’ve all been part of my journey. Each of these challenges has pushed me to dig deeper, to find strength I didn’t know I had, and to stay committed to my craft and my family.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create portrait paintings using acrylics, as well as conceptual character designs through digital art. I specialize in acrylic portraiture and take pride in how far I’ve come in my career, overcoming struggles and learning valuable life lessons along the way.I believe what sets me apart is my ability to take life lessons and translate them into thought provoking art that not only makes people think but also encourages them to question themselves and their reality.
