Check Out John Lewis Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Lewis.

John, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally, I started writing when I got to college in 2006. Naive to the world, I wrote as a way to pick up girls. Sad truth lol. I didn’t begin performing poetry until 2010.

Prior to that, I mainly dealt with theater. I learned about slam poetry a few years later competing for money locally around KC. 2014 my world opened up as I was introduced to nationals and the national stage the biggest slam in the world.

In the years after, I went to 4 Nationals competing in March 2018 was the last year there was a nation that year it was held in Chicago. It was an enlightening trip allowing me to pay attention to the methods used to coach.

I took it in came back home and created “The Regulators”. Our first time competing was at “Rustbelt 2018” in St Louis where we landed 5th in the region. Taking a step back due to Covid we are ready to continue the journey. Coming up in June as we compete in “Southern Fried”.

2021, I was a top 5 finalist in the Kansas City people choice awards for best-spoken word artist. 2020, I was nominated for best slam poet, poet of the year from the music, and more foundation poetry awards.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
In the beginning, it was being able to find stages to perform on. Later in the years, it was finding topics to write about that allowed me to grow as a writer.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I created a brand ˈpoʊətri printing shirts hats and other merchandise. At the moment, I have 2 books out and a few more in the works ready for print. I throw social events providing a unique experience and classy vibe.

I hope to continue to grow as a writer and performer.
