Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Williams.
Hi Jade, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was a junior in college; a Chemistry major with a Pre-Med emphasis. I knew that I wanted to be successful and make my family proud, but each day that went by I continued to notice how uninterested I would be in the things I was studying. I was already more than halfway through obtaining my Chemistry degree, so there was no time to change my major. One day, I picked up my phone and googled, “cosmetic careers with chemistry degree”. Little did I know, that day would be a major turning point in my life.
I’ve had a passion for makeup since I was a little girl. I would sit at my grandma’s vanity and play in her makeup. I even played makeup artist to her mannequin heads. As I got older, I became more interested in YouTube makeup tutorials and started applying makeup to myself. Family and friends began to notice the talent I had and would ask me to do their makeup. In 2013, I branded my makeup artistry as Luxe Glam Beauty and over the years my clientele grew.
I knew that I wanted to have a career in cosmetics. While in college, I toured a few cosmetology schools but found that they would be too costly to afford at the moment. Still, in an effort to further my education, I found the University of Cincinnati’s Cosmetic Science Master’s Program and quickly applied. With this degree, I will be able to formulate cosmetics. As a makeup artist, I wanted to be able to use my own products on clients and have them available for purchase. Being so hands-on with these products gives me more insight into what properties of certain products make them good products.
2017, I created Heiress Cosmetics with a vision that I would create a cosmetic line that would provide each customer with an experience of royalty. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that I launched. From 2017 to 2020, I poured into my brand. It was basically a one-woman show. I was hands-on with every aspect of my brand. I drew and converted my own logo, I designed and calculated measurements for product boxes, I created my own website, I designed my own marketing material, and of course, I designed all of my products.
In April of 2020, I launched my website and in November of 2020, I opened my first physical location.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Within my business, I provide services as well as sell products. Outside, of my business, I am still working a 9-5. So finding the balance between working, fitting in with clients, and still creating for my cosmetic line was one struggle.
And I’m always looking for more ways to better myself and my business, so I’m also trying to fit in furthering my education and skills. Also, my business has been completely self-funded; from complete inventory to opening my physical location. So it hasn’t always been easy but I always make away.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, I initially started out as just a self-taught makeup artist, which over the years is how I’ve made a name for myself. And that will always be my passion. I then decided to create a cosmetic line. I think the whole experience creating my cosmetic line is something I’m most proud of because I’m so hands-on in every aspect of it, and that also leads me to what sets me apart from others.
I have a post-baccalaureate certificate in Cosmetic Science and I’m halfway through getting my masters in Pharmaceutical/Cosmetic Science. So not only do I have insight on cosmetics as a makeup artist and as a consumer, I also have insight as a formulator.
What makes you happy?
Whenever I’m having a bad day or feeling down, doing makeup makes me happy, whether it be on myself or a client. At the end of every session, seeing my client’s reaction just adds that extra joy to it all.
Also, self-care. Self-care is one of the greatest forms of happiness for me; mentally, physically, and emotionally. Getting my hair, nails, makeup is done, etc. Makes me happy. When I’m looking good, I’m feeling good. Also, meditation. With all of the tasks I juggle from day to day, life can get stressful. Meditating helps me relieve that stress and brings me to my happy space.
