Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Dsouza.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was three years old, my parents bought a music school here in Brantford. Ever since then, I’ve been obsessed with music. I started playing drums when I was four, guitar when I was six and began singing lessons when I was nine. At ten, I started writing my own songs. The first songs I wrote were heavily influenced by The Beatles because they were pretty much all I listened to at the time. And that’s something that’s never changed for me in the six years that I’ve been writing songs. The artists that I listen to the most frequently are always the ones that rub off on my own music the most. I released my first single called “Come Back to You” in February of 2021. Currently, it has 2.2k streams on Spotify. A few months later in June, I released my first EP called “Nights in California”. I released it amid COVID lockdown here in Ontario. I was eager to release more music but since I couldn’t get back into a studio, I just recorded an acoustic album on my own. I took this summer to improve my recording and production skills and released “Love Thy Neighbour” at the end of August 2021. Right now, I’m just working on recording as much music as I can so I can continue to release more.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Quite honestly, so far the biggest struggle has just been COVID getting in the way of plans. But I am grateful for it because if there hadn’t been lockdowns, I wouldn’t have written some of my best songs, let alone record and released them all on my own. It hasn’t been the smoothest road thus far, but I took advantage of the time that was given to me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer. Typically, my style of music is hard rock or punk, but I try to be as versatile as possible. I love writing songs that are out of my comfort zone style-wise. I specialize in guitar heavy, riff rock songs. It’s what I’m best at writing and what I’m most experienced in producing. My proudest accomplishment is my song “Love Thy Neighbour”. It was the first song I released that I did everything all by myself on. I wrote, recorded, and mixed the song entirely by myself.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
The voice memos app on my phone is my best friend. Whenever I write a song, I can forget the melody or mood of it so easily if I don’t record it right away. It’s my biggest weakness. I’ve lost so many melodies and ideas from not recording them and forgetting them right away. The voice memos app helps me so much with that.
