Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Petrie.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Iowa. After High School I went to the University of Northern Iowa for Elementary Education and a minor in Special Ed. After college, I moved to Colorado where I worked in a preschool and a bank, not enjoying either job. It was then I decided to go back to school for cosmetology, and I haven’t looked back once. I loved teaching, but hair is my passion! I have recently become a crazy plant lady and I’m rocking that hobby!!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s always scary to restart a career. A lot of second-guessing and struggling with full-time school/full-ish time work. I had a lot of support from family and the desire/passion really drove me to succeed.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been a cosmetologist since 2015. I worked a few years at a salon building my knowledge and clientele. I made the great leap with a close friend and coworker to move to booth rental and start my own small business. That is no small feat either! I have no business background or training to support my start, but if you want something bad enough, you’ll figure it out and make it work! Every day there are different stressors and concerns, but when I am in my salon and with my clients, I am in my element! I’m so proud of myself for sticking out the hard times, putting in the extra work and extra time, and doing what I needed to do to make this work!
What were you like growing up?
I grew up always wanting to be a teacher, pretending with my imaginary class, and a hairstylist, practicing on my Troll dolls and my poor cat’s whiskers. I’ve been very lucky to have been able to achieve both dreams! I was bossy with my sister, and still am. Also introverted and shy with everyone else. And I loved gymnastics, animals, other sports, outdoors, singing, and dancing.
