Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmond Mason.
Hi Desmond, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello! My name is Desmond Mason, and I’m a full-time working musician based in Kansas City, MO.
I also compose, produce, record, mix and master music, I started my musical journey in 3rd grade at Westridge Elementary (Raytown, MO) on violin. I played the violin while dabbling with the piano until the 6th grade. I took up piano formally senior year in high school (2006) and got introduced to jazz in earnest at a UMKC jazz camp a short while later.
Bobby Watson gave me an autographed “Jazz Piano” (Mark Levine) book to help me develop my craft and the rest is pretty much history up to this point. I started my music production journey in July of 2015, and with the same discipline and determination I showed while learning piano, I worked at that craft and have gotten pretty good at it if I don’t say so myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road surely hasn’t been easy. The death of my grandmother in 1999, and my mother’s drug addiction (she pawned away my violin) delayed my musical development quite a bit.
The sailing has been quite smoother since my piano journey started, but not without bumps. Once, I had $2500 worth of equipment stolen out of my car. I lost a job which led me to pursue music full time in the first place.
Yet, growth doesn’t happen without some sort of struggle, so for those trials, I am grateful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
