Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisha María – Breona
Hi Daisha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am originally from Jersey City New Jersey. I have a brother and a sister, and I moved around a lot as a kid because my family was in the Air Force. I found my way to Kansas City when they retired here. I have an associate degree in business administration, bachelors degree in communication and a masters Degree in executive leadership.
I have always been interested in art. I used to want to be a fashion designer when I was younger so I would do a lot of sketches. However, it wasn’t until I took my first art course in high school where my art teacher encouraged me to try something new and I decided to try painting. My first piece was of ballet slippers. I did not take it seriously after that I just thought it was a cool project. It wasn’t until I went through a mental health breakdown that I really started taking painting seriously.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A few years ago, I went through a mental health breakdown where I learned that I have bipolar. During that time I wasn’t able to work. I almost got evicted and the depression was overwhelming. Much of this was triggered from childhood trauma that hadn’t been addressed, but once I found the healing, I was able to find peace.
during this time, God really helped me and gave me clarity to what is important. My family helped me with their support and patience. My therapist helped me Understand my trauma and triggers so I can control and manage my bipolar more. Painting Was something I was able to zone in on and get out creative thoughts and emotions.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Through my art, I strive to interweave the tapestry of cultural awareness, shedding light on diverse experiences and perspectives.
I also enjoy exploring the delicate nuances of mental health, I aim to spark conversations and foster empathy. Embracing the beauty of all bodies, my work celebrates body positivity, advocating for self-love and acceptance. Ultimately, my art serves as a catalyst for freedom of expression, inviting viewers to engage, reflect, and be inspired to embrace their true selves unapologetically.
Although I do work on canvas, I mostly work on cardboard as a mixed media addition to the pieces. It pays homage to hip-hop and street art and adds another dimension to the work.
I am most proud of how inspired people have become from my journey and the messaging behind the art. Never thought that would happen.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
God/Family/ mentors/ other artists. Each have brought me out of my shell, helped me believe in myself, and have helped challenge my creative limits.
