Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooks Brown.
Hi Brooks, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hey there–I’m Brooks. I’m 27 years old and I’m a musician, DJ and producer based in Leawood, KS. I was born in Tulsa, OK, grew up in the Kansas City area after we moved to KC area around age 4. I fell in love with music @ age 10 when my grandpa showed me a simple lick on his acoustic guitar–continuing to learn guitar led me to playing in bands + as a solo act all through middle and high school and leading worship at my church for 8+ years.
Most pivotally, I fell in love with dance music listening to deadmau5 and Skrillex’s early projects in middle school. Inspired, I downloaded Ableton Live, bought a DJ controller, started producing and DJing music I loved wherever I could–club gigs and local support spots, but also birthday parties, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, you name it.
I moved to Los Angeles and graduated from the University of Southern California in 2020 earning my Bachelor of Science degree in Music Industry. Subsequently I worked in the music industry as an A&R research assistant and royalty administrator for Mom+Pop Music, a Brooklyn-based indie record label, at their Los Angeles office.
In March of 2025 I moved back to Kansas City to continue my artistic pursuits as musician, producer, and DJ.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been blessed with a lot of incredible opportunities in my life, but nothing in life is ever as smooth as silk.
My dad passed away in 2009 when I was 11 years old, which was a hugely traumatic and life-altering event for me. He took me to my first guitar and band lessons which I remember to this day. As a result my mom and brother are my closest friends and I am forever grateful to them for supporting me in my music endeavors.
Moving back to the KC area after losing my job in LA was a more recent struggle, but I’ve since found my footing yet again in the city I love so much.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I studied and worked in the music industry for 5 years after I graduated from USC. I worked almost all of those 5 years at Mom+Pop, a company that I admire and respect immensely–as much as I did when I started working there as an intern in 2020. Since leaving Mom+Pop, I’ve been working with various clients as a royalty and data administrator and teaching music at Bach to Rock, a music school franchise in Leawood, KS.
I’m really proud of my taste-making ability and how it translates to my staying on top of the most exciting music week in and week out. I love dance music with a fierce passion, and take discovering new, talented artists very seriously.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Nice question!!
Always a fan of a gig opportunity–DJ deck time in particular 😉
