Check Out Austen Nordstrom’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austen Nordstrom.

Hi Austen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a photographer started back in high school when I was just a sophomore — and before I knew it, photography became a huge part of who I am. I started out taking family portraits and nature photos anywhere I could, always chasing the next best photo. By senior year, I was part of the yearbook team, capturing as many action shots as possible at every sports game. That passion led to several local awards and even a national award in Washington, D.C., in the Sports Reactions category. When Covid hit, I wasn’t sure what direction to take, but that season ended up shaping me in ways I never expected. It’s also when my faith really took root — God’s guidance became my compass, and honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without Him directing every step. Not long after, I joined a company photographing portraits of athletes from middle school through college across state lines in the Kansas City area, while also starting my own business doing senior portraits, family sessions, and action photos. My slogan, “Capturing Life’s Milestones,” really sums up what I strive for — creativity, quality, and storytelling are at the heart of everything I do. Every picture tells a story, and being able to freeze those real, meaningful moments in time is what makes this work so fulfilling. And through it all, I’ve been blessed with an incredible partner — I married my amazing Wife, Natalea, on May 31, 2025 — and she’s been my biggest supporter, always encouraging me to chase both my dreams and God’s plan with everything I’ve got.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The biggest challenge came during COVID, when everything stopped and I found myself unsure of what to do next — whether to go to college, take a gap year, or change directions completely. That season of uncertainty was tough, but it’s also where my faith truly began to grow. I started trusting God with my future, and He led me down a path I never could’ve found on my own — one that turned my passion for photography into a calling. Looking back, that moment of doubt became the turning point that shaped everything I do today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a portrait and sports photographer based in the Kansas City area, and my work is all about “Capturing Life’s Milestones.” I specialize in sports portraits, Action Photos, and family sessions — blending creativity, quality, and storytelling to make every image feel alive. I started out shooting sports action in high school, which led to local and even national recognition, and that same energy still drives my work today. What I’m most proud of isn’t just the awards or milestones, but the stories behind the photos — the moments that reflect who people are and what matters most to them. I think what really sets me apart is the way I approach photography as more than just pictures; it’s about connection and purpose. Every photo tells a story, and being able to capture those memories with intention and passion, is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about Kansas City is how much it continues to grow and evolve every year while still keeping that hometown feel. There’s such a great balance of creativity, community, and opportunity here — it’s the perfect place for photographers like me. I especially love how many incredible portrait locations there are in and around the city. From the urban textures of the West Bottoms to the beautiful, timeless scenery at Jacob L. Loose Park, there’s inspiration everywhere you look. If I had to pick something I like least, it would probably just be how unpredictable the weather can be — it definitely keeps you on your toes when planning outdoor sessions!
