Hi Astros, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi! My name is astro, I go by Astros_here online! I started cosplay in around 2014 when I was 12 years old! I started out with a terrible fnaf cosplay using acrylic paint on my face (dont do that) and kept going ever since! I started making and crafting my own cosplays around 2023 and started booking guesting work at conventions shortly after! Then recently I now officially started teaching sewing classes as a job! Professional Cosplay is still my #1 income but its so fun to start something new!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have autism and other mental and physical health disorders! So in turn I have breakdowns and hiccups when things dont go 100% to plan. I’ve lashed out at my family and friends more times then I can count just because my cosplay wasn’t perfectly made, or something went wrong in the process. I also have to take longer breaks then a normal person just because I cant sit or stand very ling without some pain happening!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Im a 60+ award winning master level competitive cosplayer! That boils down to i make a ton of costumes and I win awards all the time for them! I specializes in needlework and sewing but i have skills and experience in so many other crafts (like crochet, scent work, pattern making, eva foam, 3d print finishing, larger then life props, beading, embroidery, and sooooo much more for example) I get booked to go to conventions all the time all over then country! Ive also competed in almost every state!
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I like to think when I was younger I was a risk taker, but not so much anymore. My first cosplay i every made was a bit of a risk for how much skill I had (which was non) and i choice to do a larger then life build, then my second build was bigger and better and spiraled from there. Then now I tend to stay in my lane and what im comfortable with. I think about risk less like risk and reward and more of if its possible for my skill set or not.
